Problems with xlinks in SVG documents

I'm trying to embeed Batik in an application, but when I try to transcode 
an SVG document with xlinks, I get the following error:

org.apache.batik.transcoder.TranscoderException: null
Enclosed Exception:
batikLogo.svg:-1
The URI '' specified on the element <use> is invalid

Any suggestions?
