I've used JMeter on my home PC (Win XP) with the proxy recorder, and it works 
fine for me.

It could perhaps be a DNS issue - what happens if you run a local Tomcat or 
Apache httpd on the same system, and use the proxy to record a session using 
localhost?

Are you running a firewall or suchlike?
