Can Xalan be forced to ignore namespaces

Dear All

I have a situation where a large stylesheet has been written.
My Java application has objects implementing the interfaces from org.w3c.dom. 
The application adds namespaces to each element if it is not the default
namespace( Perfectly normal) However, the stylesheet hasn't been written with
namespace prefixes before the elements. Can Xalan 2J be forced to use
wildcards when matching the names  ie ignore the namespaces.
