Cannot merge or append with PDFMergerUtility in .NET

Calling the appendDocument or mergeDocuments methods on PDFMergerUtility in .NET results in exception "Object reference not set to an instance of an object." I can call "addSource" and "setDestinationFileName" without getting an exception. 
 
I'm using .net 2.0 and 0.7.3 PDFBox build. 
 
Example: 
org.pdfbox.util.PDFMergerUtility merger = new org.pdfbox.util.PDFMergerUtility(); 
merger.addSource("C:\\file1.pdf"); 
merger.addSource("C:\\file2.pdf"); 
merger.setDestinationFileName("C:\\file3.pdf"); 
merger.mergeDocuments(); // <-- exception thrown here
