null cell and cell type blank..

Hello,
what is the difference between a null reference to a cell, and cell type
blank (3)?

Hi John.

I made the experience that it depends on the history of a file whether a
cell is null or is shown but with an empty value.

When it (or the line around) was never used it seems to be the null
case.
