[jira] Created: (DIRSTUDIO-65) Data export "Returning Attributes"
drop down field assist should work without typing any letter
Data export "Returning Attributes" drop down field assist should work without typing any letter
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Key: DIRSTUDIO-65
URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/DIRSTUDIO-65
Project: Directory LDAP Studio
Issue Type: Improvement
Components: ldapstudio-browser
Affects Versions: 0.6.0
Environment: Ubuntu 6.06
Reporter: Przemyslaw Rudzki
Priority: Trivial
In the Data Export wizard it is only possible to choose returning attributes after at least one letter has been entered. The drop down remains empty if no letter has been typed in. I know that field assist in RCP needs a lot of improvement but maybe there is a way to fix it.

Yes, you are right. The dropdown list provides the history of recently used returning attributes (BTW: also the drop down lists of "Search Base" and "Filter" have such a history). The list with proposals appears when you start typing or if you hit Ctrl-Space (that is the default content assist activation of Eclipse/RCP).
So, how to improve it? I think if you know how it works it is useful yet. Either select a set of returning attributes from the history or type in a new set of returning attributes where you get content assist. Maybe we should improve the user doco in order to explain this concept? The wizard is described here: http://directory.apache.org/ldapstudio/static/users_guide/ldap_browser/tools_ldifexport_wizard.html and http://directory.apache.org/ldapstudio/static/users_guide/ldap_browser/tools_search_dialog.html

After playing with it a bit more I can see that this functionality is a mixture of selecting workspace (history) for Eclipse and field assist. I admit that after one gets to know it it does the job really good. However, maybe having an additional dialog would make it more intuitive? I was rather expecting a list of available attributes to choose from - not an empty list. Maybe having a dialog similar to the page allowing to select object classes in the new entry wizard that shows up after selecting [...] button? Maybe add another page to the wizard? I understand that you probably want to keep number of open dialogs and pages at the minimum so maybe it would be possible to put short (3-4 rows) list viewers on the dialog would do the trick. Anyway, just a minor suggestion.
BTW. Me guilty ;-) of not reading the docs which explain the whole thing clearly.

I have not used that feature for some time now so it's kind of hard to suggest anything.

Stefan Seelmann resolved DIRSTUDIO-65.
--------------------------------------
Resolution: Won't Fix
I would suggest we leave it as is, this functionality exists for almost 2 years and I think users are familiar with it. Other opinions?

Hmmm now I can see how it works... Maybe the button should be called history or something rather than a regular dropdown. It is a bit misleading.
