The 2020 ASF Community Survey is live

Hi folks,

The Survey we worked on is live!

Here's what has gone out. The emails to apache IDs, will go out at 3pm PST.

- ASF Foundation blog https://s.apache.org/pzol5
- D&I blog https://blogs.apache.org/diversity/entry/launch-of-the-2020-asf
- @TheASF Twitter feed https://twitter.com/TheASF/status/1202675197968601092
- The ASF on LinkedIn
https://www.linkedin.com/company/the-apache-software-foundation

...plus advance notice sent to members@ and a special invitation for PMCs
and PPMCs.

We have also issued this to announce@ and our dedicated media/analyst list.

This will appear on the apache.org homepage and archives within the hour.

Thanks to Sally for helping us publish this.

Also, a HUGE THANK YOU! to Katia Rojas, Justin Mclean, the dev@ team in the
D&I committee and the Bitergia team to make this possible.

Please help us promote the survey.

Hi folks,

Thank you everyone for helping get this survey off the ground and making it reality.

I am encouraged by the bold move the ASF has made today with this survey and I hope other communities in the open source ecosystem will follow suit.

I eagerly await the results.

Best,
Georg

It's not the end of the world, there is a question asking what type of
affiliation one has to the ASF (committer, PMC members, etc.) we'll look at
this %s there.

Congratulations also.

I think folks are sort of overlooking the details of the comms. Another committer I know tried to fill out the survey as well Awasum apparently did, but shouldn't all of us with a.o emails be waiting for the direct email? Otherwise early birds using the general link will not count towards the percentage responding to the direct email.

Hi folks,

Thank you everyone for helping get this survey off the ground and making it reality.

I am encouraged by the bold move the ASF has made today with this survey and I hope other communities in the open source ecosystem will follow suit.

I eagerly await the results.

Best,
Georg

For clarity - We'll review aggregated data by question. So we will only see
there is one person over 65, but won't associate any other data point with
that.

Re: The 2020 ASF Community Survey is live

So will we be reviewing the data as anonymous entries or anonymous
aggregates? If I can see that Apache has only one over-65 person, that
doesn't tell me anything other than the single over-65 person filled
out the survey. However, if I can see each entry with an anonymous id
instead of their name, then yes, that is fairly easy to reverse back
to names.

In a board@ thread, which I am staying away from, Dave Fisher remarked:

Although inferring identity from one or two answers is probably limited
to a few board members, combinations can be very powerful. My survey
answers show that I am over-65, female, PhD, PMC and ASF member, UK
origin, US resident, and sometimes attend face-to-face meetings but not
often. That is probably not a very large demographic.

I have the same concern. One thing that can be done even now is to
establish a minimum size of group for which statistics will be broken
out for publication.

Aren’t we looking at aggregate data?

Not sure if this is the right venue. Feel free to redirect me.

Working my way through the survey, I'm finding that - for me at least -
it would be trivial to de-anonymise my response. It isn't going to
affect my answers but I wonder if it will affect the responses of others.

I'm not sure what could be done about this. We need the demographic data
but that combined with out relatively small population and relatively
detailed data available about each committer's activities makes
de-anonymisation easier.

I think this is something to file under "things to take into
consideration for the next survey" but I wanted to raise it while it was
fresh in my mind.
