Differentiate between non existing and empty directory

Hi all,

Is there a way to distinguish between and empty and non-existing directory?
For both cases, we get back the same result.

[lohit@ucdev9 ]$ hdfs -ls valid
Found 0 items
[lohit@ucdev9 ]$ hdfs -ls invalid
Found 0 items
[lohit@ucdev9 ]$

is there a work around for this? I tried -du/-dus ; all of them seem to return same output
