As for the compile time dependency note. I have changed that also to 1.7.6 as primary driver for that was env like Sling where Oak would be used so far provided Slf4j 1.6.x version. They have now moved to current Slf4j release (1.7.x) with SLING-3243. So it is safe to update the compile time dependency and make use of var-args based api
