We ship a lot of external jars in the /lib directory of the assembly.
I know that for Spark and Hive none of those are needed, because we take everything from the Spark/Hive classpath.
I am not familiar with the Kafka connector, but according to the readme, that one also adds the jars from 'hbase classpath' , so which includes most/all of the external JARs in the lib directory.
