[GT2007] ANN: The 6th Cocoon GetTogether, Rome, October 2007

The Apache Cocoon community is proud to announce the sixth edition
of the Cocoon GetTogether, the main annual gathering of current and
future Cocoon users and developers. Do mark October 3th through 5th
down on your calendars, and get ready for a trip to beautiful Italy.
The Cocoon enthusiasts will be waiting for you to join the party in
beautiful Rome!

During this event, you'll have a unique chance to meet and intermingle
with fellow Cocoon hackers, to hear what's hot and what's not, and to
get your hands dirty with some real on-site Cocoon coding. Alongside
the presentation program, there'll be an exhibition of companies with
Cocoon-based or related products and services.

During the traditional Hackathon, developers and users will team up to
discuss the Cocoon internals and work side by side on current Cocoon
issues.

It's definitely worth coming to the Hackathon if you really want to
know what the inside of Cocoon is all about! Following a tradition of
participation with other Open Source communities, the Hackathon will
be open to any group of Open Source enthusiasts: feel free to crash
the party and enjoy getting together with fellow Open Source
developers and users.

Apart from this official program, everyone is invited to the (also
very traditional) Cocoon community evening events. Italy is well known
for great food and wine: other than enjoying the outstanding beauty of
Rome, do get ready for some serious eating experience!

More information is available on http://www.cocoongt.org. See you in Rome!

Leszek, have you considered attending GT this year?

It would be great to see another Polish fellow in Rome.

count me in. I deep into Wicket currently (I always was more of web
*application* developer than web *site* developer.

Still in wicket I lack OOTB caching and pipeline handling (i.e. for
reporting).

It probably would be nice to create a wicket component that is able to
pass it's model to cocoon servlet and get the xml content in return.

Abroad? I thought you lived in Europe somewhere? I flew in from
California a couple of years ago (I can't believe it has been that long
already). It was my first time to Europe and I had a really good time.
Unfortunately I won't be able to go again this year, but I will see any
of you who can make it at ApacheCon US in November.

There's no such thing as dumb questions - if you're wondering, others
probably are too!

With the hackathon on 3rd and 4th, people often arrive during the
first day (and some the day before depending on travel budget). But
if there are no suitable flights morning/evening it would certainly
be good to arrive the day before. I'm sure many of us will be around
and available for beers :-)

I'm not sure on my flight plans, but I'd bet there will be others
arriving then.

I hope Gianugo or some of our Rome Cocoonistas will post some
suggestions ... Simone? Gabriele? Maurizio? PING! :-)

Ok, I'm almost decided to see you at GT! :-)

However, I need to sort out some issues first with booking flights. I
have never been abroad and never have been to such event so please be
tolerant to my, most probably, dumb questions.

What are exact timings of each day? I guess that I'll have to arrive to
Rome on 02.10.2007 and leave on 06.10.2007 because I have no flights for
Wednesday morning and Friday evening. Does it make sense?
What are your plans? Anyone arriving on 02.10.2007 to the Ciampino Airport?

What I would like to add is that our users already tried[1] to do so. I
don't know Wicket architecture so I'm not sure how hard it would be to
call pipelines from there. When it comes to Cocoon side, I believe that
modiciations to the current code would be minor. AFAIR,
BlockCallHttpServletRequest class already has access to the original
request so it can forward whatever is needed. It's matter of
implementind methods that would delegate to the original request.
You may find COCOON-2066[2] interesting.

Thanks for mentioning this. I remember now about this
"UnsupportedOperationException" issue on
ServletRequest.getLocale().

Indeed, that would be great to allow integration of Cocoon and
Wicket. Integration is already possible through the use of
servlets in web.xml, but of course having the power of sitemaps to
« mount » a Wicket application would be a plus.

However, this would require a dedicated URL space like /wicket/**
because Wicket has its own strategies for controlling the URLs.

Cheers,

hehe, I was already hoping for some reaction from you ;-)

The Cocoon servlet-service-framework allows to mount *any* servlet
(http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/cocoon/trunk/core/cocoon-servlet-service/cocoon-servlet-service-sample/src/main/resources/META-INF/cocoon/spring/cocoon-servlet-service-demo1-servletService.xml).
One of them is the Sitemap servlet which, as you might expect, exposes sitemaps.
Basically it shouldn't be a problem to load the Wicket servlet this way either
but the servlet-service-fw doesn't forward all the necessary environment
information.

I'm not sure what the real benefit of this integration is, but I want to give it
a try and find out myself. One thing that I can think of is the usage of the
servlet protocol to access Cocoon pipelines from within Wicket and vice versa.
This should make it possible to use Wicket instead of cForms in Cocoon applications.

I read this:

[ReinhardPoetz] I want to work on the servlet-service-fw so that
the Wicket servlet is servered with the environment it needs.

Can you expand a bit (unless it has already been discussed), that

Gregorz,

we would be delighted to see you in Rome!

The registration page will be online soon, but we will follow the
tradition of keeping the event cost to the bare minimum, confirming
the last year price which was 125€ (we will probably do an early bird
discount on top of this). This includes full access to the hackathon &
conference, as well as free drinks, snacks, lunches and booze, so it
boils down to little more than 40€/day - that is a minimum
contribution to covering costs, with the biggest chunk of it being
swallowed by sponsors. A separate pricing (around 45€ per day) is
reserved for those interested in the Hackathon alone.

On top of this, we are organizing a couple of evening events, for the
price of 35€ each - again, this is what you'd expect to pay for an
average dinner, and we will make sure you'll get excellent value for
money.

Generally speaking, Rome is not an expensive city, with hotel rooms
available from 40€/night onwards (not to mention hostels). Also, there
is usually a good number of people who like sharing a room.

Please don't hesitate to ask for further information (but note I will
be on vacation starting tomorrow and getting back on the 21st). And I
really hope to see you in Rome in October!

Ciao,

I'm wondering about "crashing the party" and seeing all of you. I've never participated in such
event and have *no* idea about costs. I have already seen some information on Cocoon GT's site but
it was rather general and did not include any amounts of money needed.

Gianugo, could give some rough number of euros needed to feel comfortable in Rome. It really can be
approximation because I want to get an idea if it's affordable for me.
