Why is mod_jserv.so needed for Apache + Tomcat?

Dear Tomcat Community:

I've read (and also attempted but was not satisfied) with the
    Tomcat + Apache setup.

Why is the mod_jserv.so module needed? That is, this
seems to defeat the purpose of even having Tomcat
if we are using Jserv? Or is some special variant
of Jserv suppose to be used?

The mod_jserv.so module handles the Apache to Tomcat communication. The Jakarta/Tomcat project explicitly states that it is the merged product of the Sun reference implementation with Apache JServ. There are many things in JServ that were not present in the earlier implementations from Sun that are now being added to the Tomcat platform. JServ itse;f is not being used, but portions of it exist within Tomcat.

Hi,

Yes, there's a newer "special variant". The new mod_jserv.so, that's
available, for example, here:

http://jakarta.apache.org/builds/tomcat/release/v3.1_beta_1/bin/linux/i386/

is the connector to Tomcat.

Regards,

John
