Pssst, interest in track for upcoming apache con?

Howdy,

I just heard on the grapevine that plans underway for ApacheCon, early October in New Orleans.

This event will be held in person.

I’m interested in the idea of a mini-track for directory.

Yeah, I know it’s been kind of quiet here lately. But, work is still being done. We’re still fixing windows and replacing light bulbs. We’re also still talking about major improvements.

So, there’s much left to do. Active projects should demonstrate at events like this, period.

I’m willing to be track captain. Or, if someone else wants to do it, I’ll take the co-captain.

4 talks ought to do it. Is that half a track? Not sure but doubt we could muster more than that.

Happily include talks from our community. Never done a talk before but use Apache Directory, kerby, fortress, studio, api? Got some ideas on what to do? Already done some cool stuff with it and want to point it out? This is your chance.

Update, didn’t purse the track. I have submitted two proposals as there is a category for the Apache Directory!

1. What's Up With Apache Directory

Discuss project’s status, roadmaps, other stuff we’re working on, challenges, etc.

2. Towards an Attribute-Based Role-Based Access Control System

Specific to Fortress RBAC/ABAC

CFP expires at the end of May. Any other takers, how about one on Scimple … Brian?

I’ll also be calling for input for #1. Here’s its abstract:

In this talk we'll discuss the following:

1. What is the Apache Directory Project?

Comprised of several sub-projects, ApacheDS, (The LDAP) API, Fortress, Kerby, Scimple and Studio. As you might expect from a project this broad in scope, there are varied goals. But, we're all connected by a common thread, supporting LDAP implementations, protocols, security, which continues to be important concerns for our community.

2. What are we working on?

Here's we'll discuss roadmaps and other ongoing objectives from both a project management perspective, i.e. PMC, and what's going on with / how we do development.

3. What are our problems?

Some typical of other Apache projects. Keeping up with changes to infrastructure, for example, new web CMS. To how we handle security incidents. Ensuring the sub-projects are properly managed. And just keeping the lights turned on. Some specific to our technology platforms. Database corruptions, performance, caching, Java migrations, security challenges.

4. What are our solutions?

These will be interspersed with the above topics.

Yea, I figured as much. Perhaps one day we’ll get you on the podium again. My bet, it’ll be on your side of the pond. In the meantime, please take care of your family. We’ll still be here when things quiet down.

So, maybe we can get your input via content management. You certainly can evaluate talk submissions. Also need slides, state of the project, directory plans, next steps.

We need to encourage others to step up here. It shouldn’t have to be you or even me doing the talking.

If you’ve never been to an ApacheCon before, this might be a good one. New Orleans in the fall ain’t a bad place to be.

The conference itself is certainly a favorite of mine. As much a gathering of friends, as technologies. How we stay relevant in our fields, meeting others, sharing viewpoints, being exposed to new ways of solving problems.

Hi Shawn,

I'm afraid I won't be able to be in-person in New Orleans next fall, too
much familly issues to deal with (mom, 5yo, etc) but who knows.

We may have things to talk about, like offer a session on the LDAP API,
which is now pretty stable, Studio most certainly, I wish we can talk
about a new relase of ApacheDS with a fixed backend.

Anyway, I'm just a stone in the edifice, many others can bring some
valuable pieces !
