Postfix vs JAMES

hi,

I'm thinking of switching from Postfix to James. I wish to know how James is better than Postfix as an MTA? is there any comparison available between these two MTAs ? any James user has similar experience switching from Postfix to James?

appreciate your reply.

thanks,
sutha

Re: Postfix vs JAMES

Posted by Derek <dh...@yahoo.com>.
I recently switched from Postfix to James. I'm running on Mac
OS X and here are a few things to consider:

* IMAP support: Postfix can use IMAPd. James does not have
full IMAP support, IIRC. Although the chart on the James home
page at the bottom doesn't appear to have been updated in a
while. I don't need IMAP. So, I haven't dug very hard.

* Configuration: I find James to be much easier to configure
in general. I purchased O'Reilly's book on Postfix and I still
couldn't figure out several seemingly simple configuration
issues. (It's been nearly a year since I addressed those issues
in Postfix and I'm afraid I'm lacking specific examples right
now.)

* Security: Someone else on the list should address this as
I'm not using any form of encrypted e-mail right now.

* Spam Controls: I believe Postfix and James are similar in
this regard. Again, someone more knowlegable might want to add
to this discussion. James prevents relaying and such. I would
love a mailet for Spam Assassin. Unfortunately, I don't have
time right now to explore doing it myself.

* Extensibility: James is extensible through mailets (and
matchers) although I've been at a loss to find additional
mailets out there. My hope was that a third-party had written a
sophisticated mailing list/listserv mailet to replace the one
currently in James, but so far I've come up empty handed. Is
there a respository for additional mailets?

* Speed: I'm not sure how Postfix (using sendmail or other
smtp servers) compares with Jame's SMTP server. I'm not that
concerned, because our e-mail needs are minimal. However, if
you are sending out broadcast e-mails (of course fully opted in)
then you might be concerned about speed of delivery.

* Administration: You can telnet into James to configure
mailboxes, which I believe is the preferred if not only method
for doing so. (Again, someone more knowledgable can step to the
plate here.) Postfix you have to edit text files. Of course, I
would love a spiffy web interface for setting up accounts and
the such. I'm also not sure if one is already in the works.

Of course, most people on this list are probably James
advocates. You should ask a Postfix listserv as well. Are
there any special needs that you have for an MTA?
