This sounds like it's duplicate behavior as in Bugzilla#2425, with a touch of 
Bugzilla#4016 thrown in.  But the fact that the variable seems to be resolved 
each time it's accessed might be separate, so I'll let one of the developers 
with expertise in this area look at it.
In any case, while inconvenient this doesn't affect main stylesheet 
functionality so this should only be a Normal bug.
