Anyone running Vista?

I wanted to see how well 'webfolders' works in Vista against an
autoversioning svn repository. Does anyone have access to a Vista
machine? Believe it or not, I don't have *any* friends with one, nor
is there a Vista machine anywhere at my office. Eesh!

You can turn it on for the TortoiseSVN repository. Just go to Edit
Project > Tool Configuration. It is near the bottom.

I got a chance to try this with the Subclipse project on tigris. I
was able to connect fine. I deleted a folder and also edited a file.

So for me, just installing the Microsoft fix seems to have made it all work.

I work from home, so I am not part of the network. I should have
tried tigris, to see if I got the same problem. I do not have the
energy to fire Vista back up right now to try again.

You said you tried with opencollab.net? Maybe that domain is still part
of your domain and Vista therefore still considers this as "secure"?

I'm not part of a domain. I'm using Vista Ultimate here at home, no
Domain or special firewall, just a simple WLAN-router which connects to
the cable modem.
Can you maybe check the mentioned registry entry and see if it is set to
"2" on your system? It was "1" on mine but I never touched that one before.

I was disconnected from mail for a while so I missed all this while I
was trying. I was running Vista in VMWare on my Mac and had to shut
down a bunch of stuff while doing it.

I had somewhat similar experience to Stefan. It did not work. I did
some Googling and found the same patch he did. I then installed it.
A difference for me is that after installing it both http and https
just worked. I did not try with tigris.org, but I did try with
openCollabNet (http). tigris still runs SVN 1.3, although that should
not matter.

I connected to the repository root URL anyway when testing. But both
http and https worked without a hack. Maybe Stefan's Vista is part of
a domain or something where the rules are different. I have Vista
Enterprise installed in my VMWare.

I did not have Office installed so could not test its features. But I
was able to use drag and drop to copy files, edit them, and save them
back.

See r11607 in the TSVN repository. It works as expected.

Forgot to mention: for the http access to tigris.org, you must use the
*root* url (the url pointing to the repository root). Using e.g. the url
to /trunk doesn't work. But this works for https access (using the
google code project).

I don't know why Vista only accepts root urls for http, sorry. Maybe
there's a registry tweak around for this too, but so far I haven't found
a hint on the web about that.

Cool, that's great information for the book. MS considers webdav
features to be part of MSOffice, I think... it's weird.

Vista Ultimate x64 here.

I suspect this may be the source of my problems; despite claiming to
install successfully, the files that are supposed to be updated are
still the old versions.

The files are all 32-bit, so it shouldn't matter. Evidently, there is
a bug in the installer when run on x64. Upon closer inspection, the kb
article only lists 32-bit windows, and I am unable to locate an x64
equivalent. Likely my Google-fu is weak today.

go).

Do you have all Windows updates installed? Not sure if that matters, but
I'm always up-to-date with those and as I said, it works for me.

Oh, just a thought: disable virus scanners and firewalls. Just last week
we had another nasty problem due to the virus scanner in our office
interfered with http requests without any notification.
And no: I don't use any virus scanner. I'd rather have a virus which
hides perfectly so I won't even notice it than have a virus scanner
interfere with everything I try to do :)
(just in case someone asks: no, I never had a virus: I do a weekly check
with a special live-CD just to make sure)

I must have a different error. Windows keeps saying "The folder you
entered does not appear to be valid. Please choose another.", even
after installing that patch.

I am testing with the newly created
https://sandboxsat.googlecode.com/svn/ and it works fine when using
svn version 1.4.5 (r25188) from the command line. (I also tried with a
project that has been on google code for months, and failed there,
too)

After trying all sorts of variations (http vs https, trailing slash vs
no trailing slash, :80 vs no :80) I took a sniffer trace with
wireshark, and this is what I see:

OPTIONS /p/sandboxsat/ HTTP/1.1
translate: f
User-Agent: Microsoft-WebDAV-MiniRedir/6.0.6000
Content-Length: 0
Connection: Keep-Alive
Host: code.google.com

HTTP/1.1 400 Bad Request
Date: Fri, 14 Dec 2007 16:27:23 GMT
Content-Type: text/html; charset=UTF-8
Server: GFE/1.3
Content-Length: 3360

It looks like Windows is mangling (truncating?) its request, based on
some historical knowledge about browsing to googlecode.com and getting
an http redirect.

I'm out of ideas, although I must admit I haven't tried rebooting yet.
If anybody has any suggestions, I'm willing to try them.

Thanks for the hint :)

So here's my report:

First, I tried Marks suggestion and turned on autoversioning for the
TSVN repository. But I kept getting errors when I tried to set up the
web folder. It told me that the URL pointed to an invalid location.

After installing the MS patch KB907306 from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=17C36612-632E-4C04-9382-987622ED1D64&displaylang=en

the error was gone. Note that even though that patch is marked as being
for Office, I don't have *any* office component installed.

But for the tortoisesvn repository, I couldn't log in. The
authentication always failed. As it turns out, this is a "feature" in
Vista: it considers http connections as insecure and has authentication
for those disabled by default. To enable this again, I had to change the
registry value
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WebClient\Parameters\BasicAuthLevel
from 1 to 2. After that, I could successfully authenticate against the
TSVN repository.

I haven't tried write access though.

Then I set up a test project at google code:
http://code.google.com/p/webdavtestforsubversion/

Since this uses https instead of http for authenticated users, the
authentication works now even if the registry value mentioned above is
reset to 1. But of course, I still have the patch KB907306 installed
(btw: no restart needed after installing the patch).

Since this is only a test project, I wasn't concerned with trying out
write access. Moving files, creating folders works as expected without
any problems. Renaming files and folders also works.

Well, I don't have a Mac, so I can't say if it works the same on Vista
as it does on a Mac. But after installing the patch from MS, I haven't
had any problems accessing the web folder.

Hmmm - the patch KB907306 mentioned above is also for Server2003 and XP.
Maybe that one will help too? I don't have an XP machine here right now
so I can't tell.

Ben: shall I mark the test project on google code as deleted? Or maybe
someone else likes to get access there for testing too first?

Actually, autoversioning is turned on for all code.google.com
projects. All you have to do is log into a google account, go to
http://code.google.com/hosting and create a new project. Once you've
done that, your project will be visible at
http://code.google.com/p/projectname, and your repository will be
available at https://projectname.googlecode.com/svn (note the SSL --
it's required for writing.)

My goal here is to update the 'autoversioning' appendix in the svn
book with Vista information. I'd like to see if you can ask Vista to
create a 'webfolder' that points to the repository (the SSL will
require authentication), and then see if autoversioning works. That
is, can you just drag and drop stuff into the webfolder? Does it work
seamlessly, just like it does on a Mac?

This is a thorny issue, because webfolders worked really well on
Win2000, but then got 'embraced and extended' in WinXP, such that they
stopped interoperating with mod_dav completely. The book appendix
talks about this a bit, and even gives a workaround to (sometimes)
make them work again in XP:

  http://svnbook.red-bean.com/nightly/en/svn.webdav.clients.html#svn.webdav.clients.file-explorer-extensions.windows

So if the webfolder is *not* working on Vista, I'd like to know that,
and I'd like to know (a) if it's the same sort of UNC auto-conversion
bug, (b) if the workaround still fixes things.

Anyone with Vista: please try it out! I'd like to hear back from
Stefan, Peter, Erik. The more data the better!

I run Vista here. But it will take me a while to set up a repository
with autoversioning. However if you have already set one up which I
could access, just tell me what I should test on it.
