Adding numbers in a column help for open office

Hi Sir/Ma’am,
When I download a spreadsheet file from the internet, I use to be able to add the numbers in the
column but only after I highlighted the column and a “little yellow sign or icon” appeared and if I clicked on that yellow icon
then I could add the numbers in the column.  The little yellow icon looked like a little arrow.
For some reason that “little yellow icon” is no longer appearing, and I cannot add the numbers in the column.
Please help me to solve this problem.
