The "Garbage Collection Ergonomics" doc for the J2SE 5.0 HotSpot VM [1] indicates that the initial and max heap size is different on server-class machines compared to client-class machines (I believe client-class machines have a default max heap size of 64 MB, while server-class machines use the "smaller of 1/4th of the physical memory or 1GB").

The server-class machine detection algorithm of the HotSpot VM is described at [2]: "For J2SE 5.0, the definition of a server-class machine is one with at least 2 CPUs and at least 2GB of physical memory."
