Subversion upgrade issues
Hi,
I use Gentoo Linux. Subversion 1.0.x where x < 4 used to work for me. I
hadn't touched my installation for a long time, but I've periodically
upgraded.
Today, I'm trying to use it again but it doesn't work. I get an error
saying:
svn: Unable to open an ra_local session to URL
svn: Unable to open repository 'file:///mnt/share/svnrepos/mysoft/trunk'
svn: Berkeley DB error while opening environment for filesystem
/mnt/share/svnrepos/db:
Resource temporarily unavailable
I can telnet correctly to localhost:3690. I can do a "svn diff" and see
correct results. But I can't do an update or a commit.
Does anyone know what could be the problem? According to some messages
on the list, this could be due to the version of db I'm using. I believe
at the time of my original installation I was using a db 4.0.x flavour,
but I'm not sure. I'mcurrently using 4.1.25. DB 4.2 isn't available yet
for Gentoo.
Any ideas what my best course of action is at this point?
Thanks,
L

What's libsvn0? I don't have that anywhere on my system.

I experienced a lot of cumbersome problems one day after an upgrade on
Debian unstable -- of which I do not know the source.
After libsvn0 was upgraded two days later, everything was working
again after I run 'svnadmin recover'.
After that experience, I modified my debian-update scripts such that
before any upgrade, an 'svnadmin dump' is backuped (I know, probably
I am too paranoic -- but image you would loose about 10 to 20 person
year) in addition to the nightly backups.
Thus, what is the exact version of libsvn0 you are using?
wbr,
Lukas

Someone asked about the file permissions. They're rw for all. THey used to
be rw for root only (the user that runs the svnserve), but I changed that
because I thought it was a permissions issue.
Yes, I'm running the svn server through inetd.

No, it won't. Svn repository formats are unchanged since 0.34, except in the
variety of BDB used.
If you have a repository you need to get back into ASAP, put it on a web/ftp
site, and email me the URL, and I'll see if I can get a dump out, and get
that back to you the same way.

I reinstalled subversion and the r3 version of db. Still the same problem.
I'm wondering now if I should go back to a previous version of svn to see
if that'll correct the problem.

I checked. The last time I used SVN successfully was in April. At the time
I was using db-4.1.25_p1-r3. Sometime in May I re-emerged it as part of
a large deep update (I think I tried porthole and it messed up my tree
or something). On Aug 4 I updated to r4. I think I did that because it
wasn't working anymore. So basically, it looks like I've been using the
same version of db since February.
I can try to go back to r3 to see if the problem disappears.

I'll try this also to see what happens.

bsddb is a Python package. You probably mean "db". If not, let me know.

First, gentoo should use SLOTs for different version of bdb, and
secondly I am running nightly regression tests on gentoo box (amd64)
with bdb 4.2.52, however I haven't installed it from ebuild. So, for
me, 4.2 has been ok.

Hmmm... There's bsbdb *and* db? I can't check right now. At any rate, I'll
try all this tonight. Hopefully it won't break anything else.
Thanks,

"svn diff" only compares the file in the working copy to the file in the
.svn subdirectory, rather than actually querying the server.

It could. This happened to me.

It would be good to know for sure. Check /var/log/emerge.log
Or browse the Gentoo CVS tree to see when a 4.1 version was unmasked to
get an estimate, if you upgrade everything often.
> DB 4.2 isn't available yet for Gentoo.
DB 4.2 is in portage, just masked.
I'm assuming you did originally create this repository with bsddb
4.0.x, and you're now running 4.1.x, and you don't already have a
current backup in "svnadmin dump" format.
1. Backup your repository files!
2. Completely uninstall bsddb, then install bsddb 4.0.14-r3
(If you have more than one version of bsddb on the system, Subversion
will find a way to use the wrong one. :-> )
3. See if svn works now. If not, try re-emerging subversion 1.0.6
4. Once svn works, do a "svnadmin dump" so you have a version-independent
backup.
5. Either pin bsddb to 4.0.14-r3, or upgrade it to 4.2.52_p2
(See package.mask and package.keywords in the Portage manual for the
current best way to force versions of packages.)
6. If you chose to upgrade to bsddb 4.2, your version mismatch problem
will be back, so you'll need to "svnadmin load"
