+Hi,
+
+This is my first release of mod_smtpd. There are a couple of rough edges.
+Only two hooks are called currently: ap_hook_handler and an optional hook
+defined in mod_smtpd called envelope. Some more hooks can be called and
+looking through the source are places where i think they could be called.
+
+This module should be fully functional and implements my vision for
+mod_smtpd's extensibility, but some changes may be necessary to fit the
+style of apache modules more.
+
+To add a handler, simply write a handler module as usual and check for the
+string "smtpd" (this has conflicts). Soon we'll use the same SetHandler
+directive as core. A handler is called after the smtp data command is
+given. mod_smtpd takes care of the actual smtp transmission. The handler
+should read data and has the power to return whenever, even though it
+should return after a single ".". A handler can get details about the
+transaction by calling smtpd_get_request_rec(request_rec *r), see how
+the struct smtpd_request_rec is defined for more details.
+
+A extending module can notify mod_smtpd what smtp protocol extensions it
+supports by called smtpd_register_extension. Also an extending module
+can handle new smtp commands by called smtpd_register_handler. See
+smtpd_core.c for more info.
+
+Currently this module can only be used by setting "SmtpProtocol On" in the
+httpd.conf file in the global scope. I'm still not sure how to get
+Virtual hosting support similar to mod_ftpd, i get errors when i try.
+Help with that is extremely requested.
+
+Also comments/suggestions are also extremely requested/encouraged.

I have no problem changing it, but if I do I'll have to change all
the currently checked in mod_smtpd plugins. Are you 100% this is the
right thing to do?

If you are running a SMTP server, mod_smtpd will always be loaded, and
if its not, it should be treated as a fatal error The optional
functions will make it silently ignore any missing symbols, which isn't
a good thing.

I decided that they should be optional because after talking to some
people I was under the impression that only modules included in the
core httpd distribution should use AP_DECLARE_HOOK and all others
should be optional hooks because they might not always be loaded.

If this is not the case, this should change soon.

Why are these APR Optional Functions?

Why can't they be AP_DECLARE_HOOK's?
