Looking for additional mentor for Edgent with community growth
ideas/focus
The Edgent community has just about all the pieces in place, great well
designed reliable software for analytics at the edge, great Apache Way
attitude and understanding and open development from the committers and
ppmc members, successful releases and good documentation of the release
process, very welcoming to anyone who shows interest in joining the
community, no sticky legal or IP issues that I anticipate.
The only significant problem I see at this point is growing the size and
diversity of the user and development community. Our last new committer
was a year ago and just saw only two new subscribers to the dev list in
our last reporting period.
I think it is a good time to bring on a new mentor for Edgent to help
kick start community growth. Any interest?
At Apachecon this week there are a couple of talks about Edgent. Please
attend if you are there and spread the word to anyone who might have
interest in either mentoring or getting involved in the Edgent community
or trying Edgent. Please forward to anyone who might be interested.
Tuesday May 16 2:30 pm:
* Video Analytics at the Edge: Fun with Apache Edgent, OpenCV and a
Raspberry Pi - Dale LaBossiere and William Marshall, ppmc members and
committers for Edgent.
Wednesday May 17: 12:15pm:
* Having fun with Raspberry(s) and Apache Projects - Jean-Frederic
Clere.
Even if you can't come on as a mentor, I would most appreciate advice on
what the current mentors can do. I can imagine lots of applications, but
I don't have a lot of industry contacts now and will soon retire from my
day job and will have even fewer. I will probably have some time to
yell, "Rah, Rah Edgent!" , but not sure my captive audience (my little
brown dog) has real interest or contacts either.
Best
Kathey
About Edgent
Apache Edgent is a programming model and micro-kernel style runtime that
can be embedded in gateways and small footprint edge devices enabling
local, real-time, analytics on the continuous streams of data coming
from equipment, vehicles, systems, appliances, devices and sensors of
all kinds (for example, Raspberry Pis or smart phones). Working in
conjunction with centralized analytic systems, Apache Edgent provides
efficient and timely analytics across the whole IoT ecosystem: from the
center to the edge.

Hi John,
I can confidently report that it is list first with Edgent. I work in the same office with many of the committers and conversations seem limited to "Hey, can you please look at my email to the list?", who can go to Apachecon, etc. There were a few very early, "Ya, best to ask on the list about that" moments, but they totally got it in no time and I haven't heard myself or Dan say that for a very long time.
I think pre diversity graduation might help with adoption as some folks don't really want to adopt an incubating solution. I certainly feel that the current committers and ppmc members would continue to act independently of single employer influence [1] , but realistically, it might be a risk to the longevity of the project if we can't achieve diversity post graduation. So, yes, it might make it easier to swim if we take the incubation life vest off, but...
Diversity was a struggle years ago when I first started with Derby. Today, with Derby, it is those committers that were not from the original code donor that keep the project going. Whether before or after graduation, diversity is a critical health component.
Best,
Katherine

Will,

I'll point out that the expectations of a podling are skewed based on how
that podling is operating. If we see a high level of on list activity,
making it clear that its list first, it may make sense to graduate a less
diverse podling, simply because its clear that the podling understands the
expectations and will be clear about their decision making. We can also
bank on mentors sticking around the PMC to keep them moving.
FWIW, my background is in messaging so I suspect from a technical
standpoint I get some of the integrations you're working on. My eyes
always light up when I see MQTT or AMQP on a slide.
The easiest way to get more users is to leech on to existing projects that
seem to be going well. Yes, I know "leech on" can be seen as negative, but
it helps draw some notion of what you're really after. For instance, we
saw an IoT Operating System right before Edgent, is there an opportunity to
bake in a Mynewt distribution that includes Edgent, produced by the Edgent
community? And if such a thing did exist, would existing Mynewt users
potentially use Edgent for their analytics? You also listed a limitation
in the Edgent platform, focused on Java. Does it make sense to produce a
Swift based client?

Hi John, I am not involved in the project from a technical perspective,
except I helped initially setting up the website and have done some
release testing and filed a few bugs.
As mentor I have been mostly just offering solicited and unsolicited
advice and maintaining the project status page (hmmm haven't looked at
that in a while, better check), posting the maturity model to the wiki
and reviewing and signing off on reports, etc.
I would be happy to commit to continuing with this minimal role as
mentor or step aside if that makes more sense given the number of
mentors if you will take over maintaining the project status page. I
think the project needs your help a lot more than mine right now as the
folks working on the project seem to totally have a handle on everything
on which I could provide guidance. If anyone on the project has
questions that I could answer, I still certainly would be available to
answer. One ppmc member requested I stay on for my "timely advice" [1]
but I certainly am never shy about giving advice no matter my formal
role. I am sure she wouldn't mind if I stepped down in my formal mentor
role if I stuck around on the dev list which I plan to.

Thanks for posting this, Kathey. For those who are interested in mentoring
Edgent or simply want to learn more, I will also be participating on behalf
of Edgent in the Podling Shark Tank event tomorrow:
*Tuesday*, May 16 • 4:40pm - 5:30pm

Hi Martin,
This sounds really interesting! I am redirecting to the Edgent dev list and bcc'ing general@incubator.a.o so the conversation can continue there. I hope you will join there. Maybe we could have an edge analytics ideas wiki page to spark ideas and interest.

my first impression when i first saw this 25 years ago when we stuffed network analytics into a MIB was that
as long as you have SNMP protocol stack and RIPv2 enabled gateway you could pass traffic info from Network device to NetworkDevice.
Cisco is probably the only company that picked up the ball on this concept with its own protocol IGMP
consequently I havent heard about network analytics as NA r&d disappeared into Cisco private domain
Given the fact that entire countries have gone dark because of what we called "network storm" now called Denial of Service does it not make sense to revive the concept of network-aware imps if for no other reason than to route traffic away from busy networks or networks burdened by DOS attack vectors.?
maybe this is pipe dream but if we can somehow config network devices to become self-aware and intelligently
route traffic away from heavily trafficked nodes and networks.. I could easily see these algorithms implemented by network intensive apps such as zookeeper and zookeeper under kafka

FYI: I asked the incubator for another volunteer to mentor Edgent and
focus on community growth and also asked for community growth ideas.
You can follow the thread here [1]
I am also interested in any ideas that anyone here has for attracting
both users and developers to the Edgent community.
