Phishing link doesn't show up in Kmail
Was going through my daily crop of spam, awfully large today, anyway, I
happened across an ebay phishing msg where the link is on a clickable bar and
running the mouse across it shows nothing at the bottom of Kmail where the
actual link is usually shown. Is this something new or have I been sleeping
and missed it? Looking at the raw msg before I forward it to various places
does show the actual address.

Not exactly. You can use Javascript to put something in the status bar,
but AFAIK KMail won't run scripts in HTML mail...and that's assuming you
convince it to show the HTML in the first place! (There are big
warnings in the UI about how HTML mail is dangerous, and by default it
will prefer the text/plain version in a multipart/alternative message.
I was getting a lot of apparently-blank spam for a while, because
spammers would put in a text/plain part but leave it empty.)

I remember there is a property in HTML which you can choose not show
the acturally link on the "status bar" of the brower, or even show a
fake link.
