Committed. Many thanks.

Even though this breaks symantic backwards compatibility for a small number of use cases, I think the 
pro's outweight the con's.

The version I committed is organized differently (I wanted to try to tweak a little improvement in 
performance) but should be the same symatically. Please roll a copy from the latest CVS HEAD and 
verify that my patch performs are yours for your use cases.
