Re: [VOTE] CouchDB Logo - Round #2
Posted by Andy Wenk <an...@apache.org>.
Hi Johs,
the marketing list is here to discuss marketing related things. The main
project mailing list of all ASF projects is the dev@ list. Out of this
reason and because of the broadest audience, all votes will be held on dev@.
Cheers
Andy

Re: [VOTE] CouchDB Logo - Round #2
Posted by Noah Slater <ns...@apache.org>.
Just to clarify: general marketing decisions can be made on this list no
problem. We're moving to dev@ because this is a big decision for the
project, and we want to get as much *feedback* on this as possible.
Consider this an exceptional instance. Most marketing decisions do not need
running past dev@ like this.

Re: [VOTE] CouchDB Logo - Round #2
Posted by Johs Ensby <jo...@b2w.com>.
Hi all,
Is this list for real or not?
It the dev list is to cast a vote too, keep it separate.
The logo discussion/proposal/vote is a marketing list process that has crashed due to the simple fact that it is a first attempt.
A nice learning process for the list.
I would suggest:
Go back to the announced process
Amend it with the missing parts
Restart on this list to conclude on the recommendation to the PMC

Re: [VOTE] CouchDB Logo - Round #2
Posted by Jan Lehnardt <ja...@apache.org>.
In addition, we should clarify the voting format. People will have to vote on all proposals and send a +1/0/-1 (+ variations) for each one of them. Not just pick the ones they like.
Alexander’s vote in this thread is a good example.
Thanks!

I've been away from CouchDB for a few months, so maybe my vote should only
count at half weight. Echoing Jason's comment: it's great to see the effort
that has gone into this.

Re: [VOTE] CouchDB Logo - Round #2
Posted by Johs Ensby <jo...@b2w.com>.
Hi everyone,
+1 Old logo
The logo is the “memory chip” for the brand experience helping the audience to quickly identify the brand and recall previous impressions.
Changing the logo resets our audience’s "memory chip" and you start pretty much all over again.
I think the logo itself is good enough to take CouchDB all the way, it could be strengthened by a not having to carry around a slogan or its mother brand Apache. These are separate parts of the identity program as I have tried to illustrate here. https://s3.amazonaws.com/johs/couchdb-old-logo.pdf <https://s3.amazonaws.com/johs/couchdb-old-logo.pdf>
Constantin’s proposal is the only one that qualifies as a logo in design quality for me. This sofa is an icon, and as such it is functional and supports the name and makes it easy to recognise and remember, which is the most fundamental function of the logo.
My reason for still voting on for the old one is that a sofa in it self does not carry the Relax or Rest message, which I would think is the whole point with “Couch” in the first place.
The old logo is a symbol of relaxation, remove the guy and you have a furniture.
I want to say thanks to the contributors with a reason for not voting for their proposal:
Paul Davis: This is Couch (symbol) + Couch (word) without the key message and the sofa dull on its own.
Nick Pavlica: Overambitious symbolism
Brad Noble: Looses the link to the name, and too generic a symbol
Sean Barclay: The 3D logo makes even more of a furniture (rather than a symbol) out of the logo. The proposal to rebrand and look at alternative names is the way to go if the existing logo was to be abandoned. If we want to start over again, we should dig deep for something really valuable, but for that there needs to be a process to support a multistep approach.

Re: [VOTE] CouchDB Logo - Round #2
Posted by Andy Wenk <an...@apache.org>.
First of all I would like to thank everybody for working on logo proposals.
This is highly appreciated and I hope everybody is professional and is not
disappointed, if his/her logo will not be chosen. Again - thanks a lot.
Here is my vote.
1. Apache CouchDB (old logo)
2. Constantin Angheloiu
The others are too far away for me personally to be able replace the one we
have actually . I do like the logo 1 from Nick (globus). It reminds me a
bit of the French art from the 60's and 70's what I like a lot. I do not
vote for it, because if we change the logo, we need something modern and
new in my opinion.
All the best
Andy
