Installer for SDK is currently broken due to change Adobe has made

Hi,

Yep can confirm SDK installer is currently broken - thanks Adobe. Can anyone else confirm it broken for them as well? You'll need to turn caching off if you had it on.

You get an authentication box pop up when it tries to download afe.jar, none of the obvious user names and passwords work and if you hit cancel you get this error:
Downloading afe.jar from: http://opensource.adobe.com/svn/opensource/flex/sdk/branches/4.y/lib
      [get] [IOErrorEvent type="ioError" bubbles=false cancelable=false eventPhase=2 text="Error #2032" errorID=2032]

Who do we need to speak to at Adobe to get this fixed?

Thanks,
Justin

Hi,

With the workaround en_AU now works for me.

In theory with cache on, the md5 is not checked. What error do you see in the log?

It's possible the cached version doesn't match the MD5 anymore or similar, I've raised a few installer JIRA issues along these lines.

Yep - need to raise a JIRA about that.

Hi Justin,

I just tried again, this time I disable the cache. Good news is, I finished the whole Flex SDK download with no problems.

That being said, there are two issues left:

1. When turning cache on, I can't finish the download.

2. The log is incorrect (you told me), causing a little confusion.

Possibly the properties file been cached?

http://flex.apache.org/installer/properties/zh_CN.properties should have a whole lot of sourceforge.net URLs at the end of the file.

The log is incorrect, it's displaying the information from the wrong place - a little confusing I know. I double checked with a reverse proxy and it's downloading teh file from the correct place (for en_AU anyway).

Hi Justin,

The sourceforge.net is not blocked in China, we can access it with no problem.

Just tried it again, same problem.

Are you saying it's now getting the file from source forge? But the Flex SDK Installer log said it download the afe.jar form opensouce.adobe.com

Fundamentally the requirement is:
TTF/OTF -> SWF DefineFont3
TTF/OTF/CFF -> SWF DefineFont4

Like I said, I don't think all of those classes are actually used. 3 of
those jars are general Adobe Font Engine libraries.

Not sure I understand. The embed font libraries we are talking about are
not open source.

Anybody is welcome to apply for a distribution license. I want to set up
a business because I live in the US and am risk-averse so I want to set up
an LLC to limit my liability. And then that business will somehow find a
way to pay for the bandwidth and other overhead. And hopefully allow me
to do Flex work "forever". But you or anyone is welcome to be a
distributor of these Adobe bits for as long as Adobe is willing to let you
do so.

My understanding is that the jar is part of BlazeDS and we now can
reproduce it. That said, I believe only a small portion of that jar is
used during compile.

Sounds easy I'm sure you could knock that over in a day :-) I did take a quick look at the jars there's 1000's of classes involved, and complexities to do with LTR/RTL, CSS styles, different languages (Thai, Arabic + many others) - that been said I have no idea what's the minimal required to get it to work. Do we know what the API we need to implement/what flex actually uses?

> And that's why we need to write our own embedded font library. Time is

Open source software (binaries or not) doesn't stop becoming open source just because Adobe decide to no longer support them, yes it would be good to have our own library but right now it's a question of reliable hosting to make usable SDKs, and that IMO seems an easier problem to solve.

> If I am successful in creating a separate business to distribute this stuff
Why do you need a business to do this? It it because Adobe will only give distribution licences to businesses? Many of us already have our own companies set up and could host the files. The issue then become is it economically to do so - bandwidth may be cheap but it's usually not free.

BlazeDS is also a dependancy until we make a release of it.

Well, I'm told that "all" we really need is a way to convert TTF splines
to CFF splines and then read a TTF file and output a CFF blob. There's a
good chance that there is more to those libraries that Flex is actually
using.

And that's why we need to write our own embedded font library. Time is
ticking on the 5-year commit from Adobe.

If I am successful in creating a separate business to distribute this
stuff then that should take some of the pressure off. But really, we
should find a way to get rid of that last dependency.

IMO a magnet for bad PR but Adobe seem good at that :-) It's not only Flex that's going to be effected by this.

Assuming they won't change it, can we get a name and password to access?

> Really, this should serve as impetus for us to get out having dependencies on Adobe.

How? I can't see anyone rewriting those jars given the specialised knowledge and time and effect they would they require. Any takers?

So hosting elsewhere? I'm not sure we can distribute those files elsewhere without a license. It's probably OK that you put them up here [1] (given it's owned by Adobe) but don't we have exactly the same issue with that? ie Adobe may pull the plug there with no notice. Also not a big issue but the rest of the PMC don't have access to that site.

I didn't investigate Apache distributing adobe bits. It doesn't make sense for an open source foundation to do that. I am going to look into creating a business to do that.

Which may be against Adobe distribution license - but we don't want to go there do we. What would be ideal is if Apache Flex got a redistribution licence from Adobe and then we could host those files ourselves, hopefully at Apache. I know Alex looked at that a while back but can't recall what the answer was/how easy it was to do.

Re: Installer for SDK is currently broken due to change Adobe has made

Posted by Alex Harui <ah...@adobe.com>.
OK, I think I have fashioned a workaround, but it is past my bedtime here,
so I need someone to finish it.

If you look at our website and the recent changes, I added a bunch of
properties to flex.a.o/installer/properties/en_US.properties, then copied
it to flex.a.o/installer/properties/sdk/en_US.properties

The new properties override the properties in the 4.13 install script and
the install seemed to work for me. There is a bug in the install script
where the log still says it is downloading from opensource.adobe.com even
though it is actually downloading from sourceforge.

So, assuming AIR urls are working, folks using en_US to install should now
be un-blocked. If someone can copy these same properties into the other
language files and put those files in the
flex.a.o/installer/properties/sdk folder, that should cover most folks.

In theory, we don't need .properties files in
flex.a.o/installer/properties, but I didn't have time to test that.

If there are issues, I'll try to look tomorrow morning.

The download isn't failing it asking for a user name and password before it tries to download. It optional if you don't want to embed fonts :-) but yes if you select only the required bits it shoudl work. I just gave it a go but looks like the AIR urls are now offline as well - what are they doing?

A question to consider is should we somehow disable the installer until the situation is fixed? But looks like Alex is on to it.

Ok, while not a permanent solution, this [1] seems to indicate that JAR is

Hi,

Do we have an alternative location we can get these bits from? Looking at google stats it probably effected 100-200 people so far (hard to tell as some people will just close the installer rather than cancelling the name/password popup), and is likely to effect 250+ people a day going forward.

If you have any contacts at Adobe you might want to mention this to them - breaking an open source project isn't exactly going to be good PR for them if they don't resolve this quickly.
