I totally agree with [~jianhe]'s comment above. It is not as simple as listing those 4 basic operations and saying that the entire service subcommand needs to be merged into application subcommand. As Jian explained above, there has to be a differentiator. Additionally, several things need to be thought through, including how to roll "mapred job", "hadoop jar", Tez AM, Spark AM, and several other specialized apps out there into "yarn application" as well.
[~eyang] your suggestions are very valid, but it seems more of a larger umbrella effort - expanding "yarn application" to provide a unified support for all disparate apps to roll into it.
