ApacheCon Talks
Hi,
Just checking in with folks to see if anyone is planning ApacheCon
talks. I'm planning on doing the introduction to Maven talk, and I'm
talking with Rod Coffin about working with him on his Enterprise
Maven talk and I would also like to once again organize the BOFs I
did the last time, "Maven Community BOF", and "Enterprise Maven BOF".
Just trying to organize with others before submitting everything.
Jason.

if i chaired then the spanish inquisition gag would work particularly well :-)
steve: are there any jakarta commons logging release managers here?
chair: i didn't expect some king of spanish inquisition!
carlos: no one expects the spanish inquisition!
carlos: confess!
chair: oh no - not the comfy chair!
etc
(ironically enough i was later asked whether RAT could have prevented
problems such as JCL to which i had to reply: sadly the tool is only
as dumb as it's creator)

that will be excellent. One thing we will also able to catch is anyone
including stuff like apache regexp in their own JARs.

I think they have some patches somewhere needed to sync it up with
testng 5.4, which came out last week,

If you have more ideas for validation think about adding them there
as anything submitted must pass the standard validator. Or if you
have any other tools make them plexus components. I'm working on
Archiva in general but artifact submission via a web service is the
thing I'm prototyping. When it works JIRA goes away for uploading
bundles.

what matters most are the methods to interpret existing meta-data and
the rules that need to be applied. IMO we should cooperate in
developing this.
it makes sense to me to share library implementations as well (though
the pay is less than for the rules). i'd prefer to have a single set
of libraries which can be ported to whatever langauges are needed
(definitely java but perhaps python for checking staged artifacts) and
then maven, ant, ivy, RAT etc could use the libraries. collaborative
development would depend on the communities being comfortable working
together, though.
stefano has suggested that labs might be a useful forum for collaboration

I was thinking along the lines of a Maven plugin that people could use
to verify that the pom they intend to upload has all the necessary bits
and pieces.
People would still need to actually *use* it, but then at least the
orderly ones would have a tool to help them make sure they are doing it
right.

1. dont worry, we wouldnt do any serious public humilation in the talk.
Mainly through fear you'd ban all user.name=stevel &&
ipaddres.startswith("15.") from commons logging.
2. There's been lots of discussion on the repo list at automating this.
We need something to audit artifacts in a staging place (like all stuff
rsynced over), as well as do a piece-by-piece analysis of submitted
files. For the latter, you could do something fancy that uses the Jira
APis to automate pulling down the pom+JAR and auditing them. A web based
thing would make it easier for people to test their artifacts before
submission.
Once the RDF conversion stuff goes into the MIT codebase Apache code can
use it to create a large repository of all the facts, which may then be
easy to analyze and audit. I say may, as it might just be harder. I'm
kind of biased towards implementing my auditing code in prolog/jprolog,
but not committed. maybe jruby would integrate w/ java better.

Its been discussed. We have all the code to turn the entire repository
into RDF metadata, including information about every class. This is what
I'm starting to analyze, the goal being to reach some interesting
conclusions. If I dont find anything interesting I will make something
up just to make the talk entertaining. Give out awards for "most
intentionally depended on artifact", and "most unintentionally imported
JAR", etc.
One thing I'd like to get hold of is the server log for one of the main
mirrors, to see which artifacts are popular, and see if I can even trace
clients walking the graph.

Yah, your stuff should find its way into Archiva, which is where I'm
going to place my submission work, and projects which do not have
their transitive closures get the boot.

I have some play-stuff in the maven-repositorytools-plugin
(mojo-sandbox) as part of a bundle-deploy mojo. It includes iterating
over imports to see if they are provided by a dependency, and also
some POM element checking.

Speaking as someone who also works on commons-logging (*ducking*), is
there work being done on a maven-repo-compliant-plugin or something
similar that could be run on every pom that is submitted through
MAVENUPLOAD? I.e. confirming to the rules set up here:
http://maven.apache.org/guides/mini/guide-ibiblio-upload.html
If not, I think I could put something together.

It will soon be impossible to publish invalid metadata.

Interesting as one of my topics in the Maven Enterprise BOF is the
conversion of huge project that basically retained 95% of it's Ant
scripting, except it is packaged up in Maven plugins to be
maintainable, and understandable.

1. "fear the repository police". We will pick people in the audience and
beat them with rolled up copies of the pom schema until they promise not
to publish invalid metadata. we will start off with "Is there anyone
here who works on commons-logging?",
2. Something on big project ant; ivy, import &c. Mostly how to use these
concepts effectively and so have a scaled build that doesnt force you to
throw away all your existing build process.
3. Work related: something on virtualization; how to use amazon EC2 to
host apache httpd and the like, what works, what doesn't (persistence,
mainly). We'd use smartfrog to manage the deployments and maybe show
using linuxcoe/instalinux to create the amazon Xen image at build time
based on the RPM list you have under SCM.
4. I've invited the TestNG people and Xavier of Ivy fame to submit
proposals. Both would be good. BTW, there's lots of unhappiness in
TestNG-users about SureFire; someone should talk to them about their needs.

I'll submit a "Maven Archiva", a "Project Visibility with Maven" talk
and a "Apache Repository BOF". If anyone is interested on working on
them with me, just ping me.
