//
// The permissions granted to the context root directory apply to JSP

// grant codeBase "file:${catalina.home}/webapps/examples/-" {
// permission java.net.SocketPermission
"dbhost.mycompany.com:5432", "connect";
// permission java.net.SocketPermission "*.noaa.gov:80", "connect";
// };
//
// The permissions granted to the context WEB-INF/classes directory
grant codeBase "file:${catalina.home}/webapps/examples/WEB-INF/classes/-" {
};
//
// The permission granted to your JDBC driver
// grant codeBase
"jar:file:${catalina.home}/webapps/examples/WEB-INF/lib/driver.jar!/-" {
// permission java.net.SocketPermission
"dbhost.mycompany.com:5432", "connect";
// };
// The permission granted to the scrape taglib
// grant codeBase
"jar:file:${catalina.home}/webapps/examples/WEB-INF/lib/scrape.jar!/-" {
// permission java.net.SocketPermission "*.noaa.gov:80", "connect";
// };
With this I can enter in web-inf and servlet of my webapp, but this is
the nighmare.
I try to enter in the example page and the servlet is displayed white
pages, and the servlet in my webapps displayed white page.
Why? The servelet to try my webapps is the servlet for the example
HelloWorldExample that before the modification of web-user and grant
displayed correct content.
What do I miss?
Sincerally yours,
Fabbris Pierluigi

Oh, I should have mentioned that my task at the moment is installing and
administrating an existing Tomcat-based application. There are a few
problems with that, and often I do not understand if these are problems
with the application configuration or with the Tomcat configuration.
Part of that is that I have, to say the least, very little understanding
of basic Tomcat concepts yet.
So, I am less interested in how to make servlets and JSPs at the moment,
and much more in understanding Tomcat concepts and how they are
reflected in the Tomcat configuration.
Anyway, thanks for your help and Gregor's; I think I'll get the
Brittain/Darwin book and see what I can make of it. The faster the
better, considering the meeting I just emerged from. :-/
Regards, Juergen.

I have no doubt Tomcat: The Definitive Guide is very good although I
would suspect it's targeted to the tomcat servlet container specifically
rather than java servlets and jsp.
At the point you are at, a book that targets java servlets and jsp is
better than a book that target's tomcat. And when looking at books on
the subject, look specifically for the servet version they cover.
Tomcat 5 and 5.5 are servlet spec 2.4 while Tomcat 6 is servlet spec
2.5. Given Servlet spec 2.4 and 2.5 are from the same JSR-154, you
should see only minor differences in the API between the two.
Lastly, I think you should eventually read the servlet specification
itself downloadable from http://www.jcp.org/en/jsr/details?id=154. As a
spec, it's not a bad read and can clear a lot of confusion. I have it
printed here in my office and constantly refer to it.
I don't personally have a favorite book as I've been using tomcat since
version 3.3 and any recommendation I could give is horribly outdated.

Forgot to mention:
Tomcat. The Definitive Guide. By Jason Brittain and Ian F. Darwin
might also be a *very* good catch since Jason is a well known
contributor to the Jakarta projects and definately knows his ways
around Tomcat - if I ever had to buy a book, I guess I'd go for the
O'Reilly...

Professional Apache Tomcat 5:
http://www.wrox.com/WileyCDA/WroxTitle/productCd-0764559028.html
There's also a Tomcat 6-version available
However, I've used the really good documentation on the
Tomcat-Website, started with their examples and read the mailinglist,
which altogether gave me a pretty good start.

What book(s) would you recommend? A fast-paced book that is not just a
gentle introduction, but covers a lot of details besides the general
principles would probably be best suited for me.
I see there is an O'Reilly book (Tomcat. The Definitive Guide. By Jason
Brittain and Ian F. Darwin); most of theirs fit the above description
and are quite good, but there are exceptions. How about this one?

<rant mode="venting">I have to tell you guy, true nightmares exist in
answering questions from people who obviously haven't made any attempt
at learning the technology before throwing stuff together and asking
questions. Please do us a favor and get a recently written book on
tomcat.</rant>
You posted the global web.xml file. Is that what you really have in
your webapp? If so, it's not necessary to copy that whole thing. This
should stay right where you found it in the conf directory. Futher,
your helloworld class isn't defined in the web.xml you posted or even a
servlet mapping for it.
I'll even help you get started a little:
webapp folder structure:
WEB-INF/
web.xml
classes/
tutorial/
HelloWorld.class
web.xml:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>
<web-app xmlns="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/javaee"
xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
xsi:schemaLocation="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/javaee
http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/javaee/web-app_2_5.xsd"
version="2.5">
<servlet>
<servlet-name>hello</servlet-name>
<servlet-class>tutorial.HelloWorld</servlet-class>
</servet>
<servlet-mapping>
<servlet-name>hello</servlet-name>
<url-pattern>helloWorld.html</url-pattern>
</servlet-mapping>
</web-app>
Source for HelloWorld.class:
package tutorial ;
import javax.servlet.http.HttpServlet ;
import javax.servlet.http.HttpServletRequest ;
import javax.servlet.http.HttpServletResponse ;
import javax.servlet.ServletException ;
import java.io.IOException ;
public class HelloWorld extends HttpServlet {
public void service( HttpServletRequest req, HttpServletResponse resp
) throws ServletException, IOException {
PrintWriter clientOut = resp.getWriter() ;
clientOut.print( "<html><head><title>Hello
World</title></head><body><h1>Hello everyone!</h1></body></html>" ) ;
}
}
Build and try it out. depending on the webapp name you give it, the URL
will look like http://localhost:8080/tutorialWeb/helloWorld.html. Keep
in mind this is the most basic example possible. There is also an
example available on the tomcat website.
