RolloingFileAppender - setMaxBackupIndex

According to the javadocs (extract below) for log4j v 1.1.3,
there is no way to have an unlimited number of backups.
0 =  no backups
1 .. n   = backup files

Is there a possibility of say -1 maning unlimited?
Or is there another workaround?

T Master

public void setMaxBackupIndex(int maxBackups)
  Set the maximum number of backup files to keep around.
  The MaxBackupIndex option determines how many backup files are kept before
the oldest is erased. This option takes a positive integer value. If set to
zero, then there will be no backup files and the log file will be truncated
when it reaches MaxFileSize.

Re: RolloingFileAppender - setMaxBackupIndex

Posted by Kevin Steppe <ks...@pacbell.net>.
You are correct. In fact with the 1.1.3 and 1.2 alpha2 implementations you
-really- don't want to make the max index very large. On roll over, it attempts
to rename all the files, which will take a long time if you have > 10k files...
If you don't want an arbitrary limit but don't expect ten of thousands of files,
then make the max index something like 1000, then just keep an eye on it. If
you really do need 10k+ files then you need a different implementation. I'm
including the CompositeRollingAppender I wrote (which was removed from log4J at
some point b/c Ceki found it too complicated) -- the CompositeRollingAppender
always for rolling by size, time, and counting up to more recent files (aka,
never rename the log files -- that is critical when you generate a lot of
them). A sample config file is at the end. If you don't like it, check the
archives, there may be another implementation.
