Could you please take a look at the document of the CAS Viewer in:
http://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/uima-1102
to see if the "CAS Types" pane on Page 3 is similar to the one that you talk about.
We have a plan to merge this tool with the CAS Editor.

Each node in the tree displays the name of the type followed by a number corresponding to the number of annotations in that document of that type. When you click on a node in the tree it provides you a context sensitive menu that gives you an option to create a new annotation for the currently highlighted text (if any) followed by options for selecting the annotations of that type (one menu item per annotation).
