[jira] [Created] (WOOKIE-253) New sample widget - Walkthrough

New sample widget - Walkthrough
-------------------------------

                 Key: WOOKIE-253
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/WOOKIE-253
             Project: Wookie
          Issue Type: New Feature
          Components: Build and Distributions
            Reporter: Steve Lee

As recently discussed on the mailing list [1] I have built a new widget for to be considered for inclusion as an demo. I've tidied it up ready for distribution and think it is now ready for testing etc. The name Walkthrough is a quick fix and better suggestions are sought.

The widget was developed by myself as OpenDirective for the University of Oxford. It was commission by the UK IPO http://ipo.gov.uk. The example Data set was created by Rowan Wilson of OSS Watch.

I've attached it as a zip and look forward to comments.

If code is contributed with no copyright headers and no request for an
entry in NOTICE is made then we don't need to add one. In this case
Oxford wanted to ensure their donation was noticed, so we said "you'll
get a NOTICE entry" ;-)

Just an aside - what is the process whereby code becomes part of the project itself and no longer requires an entry in NOTICE?

Code is never "donated" to the ASF, it is only ever licensed so the
existence of any copyright headers is still relevant and we cannot
remove them. However, we can ask the contributor to remove them and
instead put an entry in the notice file.

It's better to remove them as it keeps the code clean, but only a
representative of the contributing org can do so (unless we have an
SLA on file).

In this case I happen to be able to remove these headers (as I am a
part of the same contract that produced this and am named on Oxfords
CCLA).

In other words, I'll do the commit for you now.

Ross Gardler commented on WOOKIE-253:
-------------------------------------

The problem with this patch is that it has a server side requirement that is not supported by Wookie. The PHP script that creates a file to be saved on the client. I'm not keen to add a dependency on PHP for a single feature of a single widget.

I've discussed this with Steve (I work with him) and have suggested that either we have client side code that will create a page for printing/saving or he adds a feature that will allow Wookie to render a generic page for download (perhaps by submitting an XML and XSL document). Given that the latter is quite a bit of work I suspect the solution will be the former.

In the meantime I'll add this code to the scratchpad (after a full review).

I'd say that if the transitions don't work at all in a particular browser, that's fine. Where they are supported, they should work appropriately (e.g. in correct direction). But its not a big deal.

WIth respect to the transitions that is a problem with JQuery Mobile. The transitions don't work in some desktop browsers (fair enough given that it is for mobile devices).

There are a number of things that can be done about this, but since the widget is usable as is I see no reason for this to stop us including it, at least in scratchpad (I'll be putting it into scratchpad and will use it as a test case for deciding how we take things out of there but that's off topic for this issue).

The requirements were for the actions list to be downloadable and the simple cut n paste solution was not acceptable. As you can't initiate a download from the client it has to be done with server support and the php script was a very simple solution. I guess it could be replaced with JSP or some such.

However I am working on an alternative HTML page with a print option to replace this. It should be complete by the end of today (assuming ant run ivy:resolve actually finishes some time today).

Scott Wilson commented on WOOKIE-253:
-------------------------------------

I had a look at this earlier, and I'm not sure what the server-side requirement is needed for - seemingly its just there to prompt a form to get the user to download all its POST parameters. I'd suggest using something else to get the user to save their actions as Ross suggests - maybe show a <textarea> containing the raw content to copy and paste.

I also noticed a few odd things with transitions (i.e. not reversing direction when going back) but that can probably be fixed easily enough.
