I'm busy but a couple comments:

The "managed-schema.xml" is not an XML file, formatted, but a JSON file containing a string version of the schema.

Try doing some basic things with this new nested document support to ensure that works (e.g. child doc transformer showing nested results).  In-place updates are exotic so it's useful to test basics first.
