"Checksum mismatch" when performing update

Hi there,

Today I encountered a strange problem when trying to update a working
copy. I'm running Debian Sarge, running svn 1.1.4, the server is hosted
on the same machine and is accessed using mod_dav_svn over https.

After working in windows for a while, I went back to my linux working
copy and tried to "svn update", and received a "Checksum mismatch", as
shown below.

    $ svn --version -q
    1.1.4
    $ svn up
    svn: Checksum mismatch for 'providers.sln'; expected:
    '9cb298b2150e77340280d646c50d244a', actual:
    '6590988692d8eb0e8ed5514b5821cd79'
    $ md5sum providers.sln
    8f21805e9b084c2ce6cbbb52f325272e  providers.sln
    $ md5sum .svn/text-base/providers.sln.svn-base
    8f21805e9b084c2ce6cbbb52f325272e  .svn/text-base/providers.sln.svn-base

* There were no local modification in this working copy.
* Doing "svn up <subdir>" works fine
* Doing a fresh checkout works fine.

Any ideas? Anything I should try?

(I can easily recreate this working copy .... just wondering if there is
an issue lurking in there somewhere....)

Cheers,
Matt Doran

OK ... I've looked further and found something strange ....

    $ svn info providers.sln
    Path: providers.sln
    Name: providers.sln
    URL:
    https://localhost/repos/projects/pc-ng/trunk/providers/providers.sln
    Repository UUID: 505ffd8f-26e6-0310-8e5c-c33a79a468e7
    Revision: 251

    [snip]

    Checksum: 8f21805e9b084c2ce6cbbb52f325272e

So the file is revision 251

    $ diff providers.sln .svn/text-base/providers.sln.svn-base
    $ md5sum providers.sln
    8f21805e9b084c2ce6cbbb52f325272e  providers.sln
    $ md5sum .svn/text-base/providers.sln.svn-base
    8f21805e9b084c2ce6cbbb52f325272e  .svn/text-base/providers.sln.svn-base

So the wc file and the pristine copy are identical.

    $ svn cat -r251 providers.sln | md5sum
    7dfee8873e30d2f574a79b7e77fb9418  -
    $ diff providers.sln .svn/text-base/providers.sln.svn-base
    $ md5sum providers.sln
    8f21805e9b084c2ce6cbbb52f325272e  providers.sln
    $ md5sum .svn/text-base/providers.sln.svn-base
    8f21805e9b084c2ce6cbbb52f325272e  .svn/text-base/providers.sln.svn-base
    $ diff providers.sln /tmp/test.251
    2d1
    < !!!!
    $

But the wc & pristine copy differ to what's in the repository. (a line
containing 4 '!' characters).

Now that's weird! I could imagine I might have accidentally added the
"!!!!", but there is no way I updated the text-base and checksums to
match.  ????

Almost seems too strange to be believable?! Is there anything stupid I
could have done to cause this?

Matt

I'm not using a proxy ... and network communication is over the loopback
interface ... so that's probably not the prob. But I've done some
digging and found something pretty weird.....

    $ svn info providers.sln
    Path: providers.sln
    Name: providers.sln
    URL:
    https://svn.papercutsoftware.com/repos/projects/pc-ng/trunk/providers/providers.sln
    Repository UUID: 505ffd8f-26e6-0310-8e5c-c33a79a468e7
    Revision: 251

[snip]

    Checksum: 8f21805e9b084c2ce6cbbb52f325272e

So the files revision is 251....

    $ diff providers.sln .svn/text-base/providers.sln.svn-base
    $ md5sum providers.sln .svn/text-base/providers.sln.svn-base
    8f21805e9b084c2ce6cbbb52f325272e  providers.sln
    8f21805e9b084c2ce6cbbb52f325272e  .svn/text-base/providers.sln.svn-base

The WC and text-base file are identical ....

    $ svn cat -r251 providers.sln | md5sum
    7dfee8873e30d2f574a79b7e77fb9418  -
    $ svn cat -r251 providers.sln > /tmp/test.251
    $ diff providers.sln  /tmp/test.251
    2d1
    < !!!!

But the wc and pristine copy are different than the repository ... a
single line containing 4 '!' chars.

I can believe that I might have accidentally added the "!!!!" line the
the wc file ... but not the text-base or the checksum in 'entries' to
match!? That's weird! Almost too strange to believe.

Anything stupid I could have done to cause this?

(sorry if I've wasted your time)

Thanks,
Matt

(sorry for the almost duplicate msgs .... my box blue-screened as I sent
the mail and left no trace of it .... looks like the first one made it
to the list but not by "Sent" folder... grrrrr.)

The checksum error isn't necessarily about the text-base. Checksums
are sent in both directions over the network, whenever binary diffs
are sent in 'update' or 'commit'.

So it's possible that an incoming binary diff got munged over the
network...

It's not your text-base. This is definitely pointing to some sort of
network error as Sussman suggested. Do you have a proxy in your path
that might be munging the data?

Can you send a copy of your entries file as well (.svn/entries)? It's
strange to get this error in the first place (it usually means that you
somehow corrupted file in the .svn area). But it's more strange to see 3
different md5sums!
