Licensing Inquiry

Hello,

We have a requirement to programmatically generate PDFs, which will be used to distribute information to our customers. We don't plan to use this application commercially or license this application/product. The intent is solely to use it internally for generating PDFs with different contents, as applicable. Apache PDFBox is a robust product in this space.

Questions for you
1) What are the restrictions of using the free version of PDFBox? Do I need to follow a certain directive such as printing a particular text ("powered by Apache") on the generated PDFs?
2) Can I use the free version on any number of servers/instances or are there any restrictions?

Looking forward to hearing from you at the earliest.

Thanks,

Hi Pankaj!

first of all, this mailing list is not a replacement for obtaining a
proper legal advice.
I suggest you talk to your legal counsel and determine whether the terms of the
open source license governing PDFBox (and any other Apache Software Foundation
projects) are acceptable to you:

The license itself can be found here:
     https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.apache.org%2Flicenses%2FLICENSE-2.0&data=02%7C01%7CPChaubey%40carnival.com%7Ccf4a414f5b0e4769296c08d78fbde928%7C9e37b9e905de4906b089536f19689074%7C0%7C0%7C637135918143997241&sdata=3nyTmi97tLyMNxPB7SQZojXuoRiixLG7%2FfPcCRdxY%2Bg%3D&reserved=0

In addition to that, you may be interested in reviewing our policy for
allowable uses of
Apache® trademarks by other parties:
      https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.apache.org%2Ffoundation%2Fmarks%2F&data=02%7C01%7CPChaubey%40carnival.com%7Ccf4a414f5b0e4769296c08d78fbde928%7C9e37b9e905de4906b089536f19689074%7C0%7C0%7C637135918143997241&sdata=sJ4EU6ItDlruowmzIZvS22QLVd%2FAMHLOHz0Fw4oxDPw%3D&reserved=0
should such use be required in your case.

Finally, when you write "free version of PDFBox" you seem to be
implying that there
are non-free versions as well. I'd like to point out that Apache
PDFBox is a free software
library available under the terms of Apache License version 2 and as
such is only
subject to the constraints outlined in the license itself. For
example, there are no
constraints on the number of servers/instances this library is going
to be used on.

Thanks,
Roman.
