Changing the build.properites directory

I am going to be loading maven/jetspeed onto a server that can be logged
into by several users.

Therefore the build.properties directory that is usually in ${userhome}
would only work for one user.

How can I get around this? Is there any way to change the directory for
build.proprieties and .maven (repository and cache) so it is stored and
accessed from another directory?
