AOO 4.0 Logo: We're not done yet!

In case you are not following the discussion on the dev list, Juergen,
the 4.0 Release Manager, has proposed an endgame schedule for the AOO
4.0 release:

http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/openoffice-dev/201306.mbox/%3C51C16876.402%40gmail.com%3E

The date relevant to the logo is Monday July 1th. That is the
deadline for getting the logo changes integrated into Subversion for
the OpenOffice product.

Changes on the website and social networking don't have a hard
deadline and can come later, perhaps synched up with the actual
release of AOO 4.0, which is planned for later in July.

So what needs to be done?

1) Kevin said he wanted to make some fine tuning of the text kerning
in the logo.

2) Alexandro said something about adjusting the colors. But I'm not
certain I understood that correctly.

3) We need to update the graphics in the product. And there are a lot
of them, around 25 of them, which I've laboriously transcribed onto
the wiki:

https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/Product+Logo+Use

Most of them will be simple. It is just a matter of replacing one
logo with another, and preserving the right formats, dimensions, color
depths, etc.

A few exceptions, of placements which will require some more thought:

a) The splash screen is here:
https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/openoffice/trunk/main/default_images/introabout/intro.png

It has integrated text and graphics and the text is rather ugly. Can
we do better here? This is a place where some "wow" is appropriate.

b) Some of the placements have "high contrast" versions, needed for
when this mode is enabled in the operating system. This improves
visibility for users with low vision. For example:

https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/openoffice/trunk/main/default_images/framework/res/backing_hc.png

I think we need to consult with someone with expertise in this to know
exactly what we should be doing here.

c) This is from the SDK install:

https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/openoffice/trunk/main/instsetoo_native/inc_sdkoo/windows/msi_templates/Binary/Image.bmp

As you can see it is a more elaborate, 3D image showing
"OpenOffice.org" in the title bar. This will require someone skilled
with their graphics editor to replace that text and make it look
natural. Or redo the image.

So plenty of work to do here for anyone who is good with a graphics
editor and wants to help.

But first we need Kevin and Alexandro to make their changes to the
master SVG. After that we can work in parallel on the remaining
pieces.

The master SVG, from Chris, is here:
https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/openoffice/ooo-site/trunk/content/marketing/art/galleries/logos/aoo-working/

We have a little more than a week to do this, so can I strongly
suggest that Kevin and Alexandro make their changes ASAP, and by
Monday June 24th at the latest?

Thanks!

-Rob

Added a Comment to Regarding Stage 3 Logo Refinement:
in Original logo (Chris's version) the TM seems a bit too big and too dark?
Regarding Kevin's tuned version - iteration 4:
I agree with all steps beside the i dot size and new position. Are there
opinions one the two versions and could be placing the dot in the original
size between the two versions a solution?
And like said before making TM a bit smaller and with lighter gray like for
"Apache" would be better IMHO.

Hi Kevin, We need to move on this now, to update Twitter, Facebook
and Google+ pages with the new logo. As mentioned before I have not
been able to get your SVG to load. Please, could you send me the
original AI file?

Thanks!

Still no luck getting your version to load. I tried fixing it in an
XML editor but I'm still getting validation errors.

I'm using the latest Illustrator (the new Creative Cloud version).
Also tried latest Inkscape. Both on Windows.

If you did you work in Illustrator, could you send me the AI file?
Their native format might be more portable. I can then try exporting
to SVG on my machine.

Thanks!

I see these now, various sizes of the orb portion of the logo. I can
check those in.

Do I need to create another BZ issue for these and request release
blocker? Or can I check them in and refer to the previous BZ issue
for logo integration?

I checked the main.icns file and it is some kind of icon bundle. I
converted it and got icons with different sizes

icon_128x128.png icon_16x16.png icon_256x256.png
icon_32x32.png icon_512x512.png
icon_128x128@2x.png icon_16x16@2x.png icon_256x256@2x.png
icon_32x32@2x.png icon_512x512@2x.png

If I get these icons with the new orb, I can convert it back.

Ok we have some different icns files.

I don't see any support in Inkscape for *.icns format files. So I
can't help here. I don't have a Mac either.

I have added the found icons to the wiki.
There are some *.icns files which are used on Mac OS as far as I know,
but I can not visualize these files on my Win 7.
Can somebody else please check these files? Thx.

And for the SDK I can think of an image like this
http://people.apache.org/~jsc/test/ooosdkbitmap_test.bmp

Actually, I have a mild preference for always keeping the orb besides
the text, at least in the installation screen. The SDK image, though,
must be updated and the version with the orb above the text is still
better than the old one, so no strong objections from me.

For this image
https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/openoffice/trunk/main/setup_native/source/win32/nsis/ooobitmap.bmp
it woudl be nice to have a variant of the logo where the orb (the circle
would be above the text.

Something like http://people.apache.org/~jsc/test/ooobitmap_test.png

Any opinions, can we have such a variant as svg resource?

And we need the ork (circle) as svg as well.

I also wrote that the application icons used on Windows are using the
former orb.

I did not check Mac OS. Thus, I do not know.

Jürgen and myself found some more graphics which seems to be used as icons.
I will add these locations to the wiki.

[Release Blocker 122620] Re: AOO 4.0 Logo: We're not done yet!

Posted by Oliver-Rainer Wittmann <or...@googlemail.com>.
Hi,

I had a look at the logos and images in recent builds on Windows and
Linux. Please see my comments on issue 122620 [1].

The new logos and images look fine, but the used application icons are
still using the former orb.

Best regards, Oliver.

I personal prefer to have a task id for any change but this is of course
handled differently

A task/issue provides normally a little bit more information about the
motivation behind the change. This can help later. But probably you will
get 3 different answers when you ask 3 different people.

In a recent note you said the plan was to check in the logo-related
changes before July 1st:

http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/openoffice-dev/201306.mbox/%3C51C16876.402%40gmail.com%3E

There was no objection to that proposal so I assumed that we were
agreed that it was OK to check in logo changes before July 1st,
without any additional approval needed.

Sorry for any confusion.

do we have showstopper issue for this?

We should not check in any files without a related show stopper issue.

Reminder we are in showstopper mode!

OK. I'll check it in and let others try it.

Received and checked it. Many, many thanks!

I added a column to the wiki for which ones I checked in:

https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/Product+Logo+Use

I see two things as missing:

1) ooosetup.ico (16x16) This is the globe/birds with an overlaid
download arrow. We use the same design, but larger, as a download
icon on some webpages, so it would be great to get an SVG of this for
later rendering, as well as the 16x16 ico version.

2) The SDK imaqe, the 3D spreadsheet view:

https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/openoffice/trunk/main/instsetoo_native/inc_sdkoo/windows/msi_templates/Binary/Image.bmp

That is not so much a logo issue as a name issue. It currently shows
"OpenOffice.org" in the title bar. But this is lower priority, I
think.

To verify the changes we'll need to wait for a complete build, with
Windows install for the application, SDK and a lang pack.

Hello All,

I saved the file in Illustrator. Odd it is not loading.

I've prepare all the remaining graphics. See:
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/Product+Logo+Use for
updated owner and status.

>From what I can tell, all relevant graphics are done.

I'm at the airport right now, and won't have time to upload the files.
Actually, I don't know where to put them, either on the wiki or in the
source control.

I'll send them to Rob ;)

Kevin

There is a column in the wiki to indicate who "owns" a given image.
I'd recommend that we use this to avoid duplicating work.

Of course, if someone wants to do all of the conversions, that is fine too ;-)

I did one, as test, that used only the globe element from the logo.
You can see in the wiki I added a little comment that explained what I
did, so this work can be replicated later if needed.

If you can check in the revised master logo then we can do some of
this in parallel. Or, if you prefer, mail the new SVG to me and I
can check it in.

To me this looks like an opportunity to do something nice. It is the
single largest space that we have to illustrate. And it will show up,
briefly, every time a user loads AOO. But it is too brief, I think,
to put a long text block. For example, the current text is probably
not readable for most users. It is not translated, either. So I'd
focus on something graphical, but maybe more than just a larger
version of the core logo.

-Rob

KG01 - Our logo type includes the Apache name. This is sufficient. Their logo needs a refresh :)
