large number of messages performance

Does anyone have any guidelines/suggestions for using JMS selectors with
large number of messages on a queue?

I have noticed that with the number of messages increasing (over 100,000),
the consumers take a lot longer to receive a message based on a simple
selector query.

I am using the Kaha based persistence which is wicked fast for publishing
but somewhat slow for consumption. Is there a better persistence adapter for
this type of scenario? Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks.
