I've found it quite challenging writing a consumer for archiva because in many places exceptions are silently swallowed. I think that I would have been able to discover issues much faster if the exceptions were logged at debug rather than being lost.

Yes, I've tried to undo that whenever I encounter it too.
If you have some specific ones you'd like addressed can you submit a patch? I'd be happy to apply that in the nearest release.
