Generally, what's the effort level to maintain one of these? I think that Concom might one day want to create planet.apachecon.com to do the same thing, but for anyone who speaks/exhibits at ApacheCon. But I'm curious as to the effort level to maintain.

joe, i just setup a venus based aggregator at work over the last week end. I can help take care of the cron, scripts and config.ini needed. We can set up say a planet.apache.org for the aggregator. We'll need to figure out which machine we can run the cron on for the planet as well and figure out how to copy the stuff over to publish it.
Yes, we also need to figure out how to point people who are currently using planetapache.org/

1) the overall design of Venus is to fetch to a cache and then apply templates specifying an output directory. No rsync/cp is necessary; simply specify the correct output directory to start with.
2) I'd prefer if venus *ran* on a machine that mere-mortals can be casually given access to, so people.a.o seems like a good place.
3) To address pquerna's suggestion, perhaps a specific directory can be exported from eos/aurroa via nfs/samba/whatever and mounted directly on p.a.o in a way that permits applanet to write to that directory. That can also be done later.
4) I've updated the config scripts and cron, and /x1/www/planet.apache.org/committers now has files in it. It doesn't have all the css/javascript/image files, I'll attend to that after this is made visible.
5) Perhaps it is time to update DNS?
6) I see a number of improvements that can be made to the config, starting with using threads to speed things up.

The workspace for the scripts should be somewhere in /home/applanet, and a simple rsync/cp to /x1/www/planet.apache.org/committers should suffice. I would prefer using the /committers url for mimicing planetapache.org so in the future other planets can be set up (eg projects/ committees/ and general/).
