java jre not found

Tools -> Options --> java

keep getting
"The folder you selected does not contain a java runtime environment.
please select a different folder".
openoffice 4.1.12
jre1.8.0_331 32 bit version
also tried jre1.8.0_333 64 bit version

I consider myself to be fairly competent in computing but this message doesn't
make sense to me.
I have even tried pointing to the bin directory.

what is the secret formula ?

Your assumption is correct windows 10.
Your advice worked.
jvm was auto detected,
no need to use the add option.

You didn't mention your OS, I assume it is Windows?

Oracle changed something, and you may now need the MS runtime mentioned
here:

https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/AOO+4.1.12+Release+Notes#AOO4.1.12ReleaseNotes-ForWindowsUsers

I hope that helps!
