[Proposal:Procedure] Storing Proposals in CVS

Something we did back when we were releasing Avalon 4.0 (the
first time) that worked very well is we created a file to keep
track of issues that were important, but detracted from the
focus of the mailing list. In essence they were discussions
that we needed to temporarily put on hold, and resume later.

Since it is hard to keep track of whatever the latest and
greatest proposal is on a mailing list due to all the inline
comments, I suggest we use the same mechanism to track what
the current state of a proposal is in CVS.

The concept is simple. We have one file called
"tabled-discussions.txt" that has a bunch of entries in the
following format:

-----------------------------------------------------------

Topic: Should we use the "Tabled Discussions" format?
Resume Talks: After PMC charter creation
Comments:
[bloritsch] Yes. It would be helpful
[jdetractor] No. It is a waste of space

-----------------------------------------------------------

That way we can see what are some potential issues we need
to resolve later. We can also see what the comments are
for the time being.

If the proposal is longer than a one-line question or a
very short paragraph (i.e. 2-3 sentences), put a reference
to an external document. At the bottom of the document,
we can put two standard sections:

[PRO]

   - this is a favorable comment [bloritch]

[CON]

   - this is a dissenting comment [jdetractor]

The bulleted list would have the apache userid or a
email address so that we can keep track of who is of
what opinion. It also allows the original proposer to
modify the original proposal in light of the comments. Keep
in mind that the PRO/CON distinction is the _overall_ message
of the comment. Included in the PRO comment might be some
constructive criticism to make it better. Also, included in
a CON comment might be an endorsement of _part_ of the
proposal.

Based on the *enormous* success we had using it for Cocoon, I can only
agree to the full.

Yep. +1.

Not having any experience with any one of them, here is a list
of requirements:

* Stable. We can't have it crashing, now can we?

* Doesn't wipe out the contents occasionally.

* Hostable at Apache, or some other locale friendly to us.

If SF.net has Wiki available, we can use the Avalonia
project there to host the Wiki--but someone sited that
as violating point 2. If Turbine is successful at
getting SubWiki on an Apache machine, that would work
for me as well.

+1 !!

I have experience with TWiki. Its versioning and ability to view diffs
between revisions is very nice.

Leo,

If you want to march over to community@ and/or infrastructure@, and start
pushing for a wiki, I'll be right behind you. I want one for James, too.
But Nicola indicates that there may be some issues at the moment.

[Proposal:Procedure] an avalon wiki

Hi gang,

I believe that use of a wiki-style system [1] can be a great way to do
collaborative work, prototyping, etc. I think avalon could really
benefit from using a wiki.

Do y'all agree?

If so, perhaps we can talk about what system we'd like (SubWiki,
PHPWiki, TWiki, JSPWiki....), where (figure out whether ASF-hosting is
workable), how to cooperate on this with other apache projects (Turbine
is in the process of getting a wiki up and running on an apache
machine), etc.

have a nice weekend,

go for it :D.

It's just that if there's a lot of people who would like a wiki, we can
tell infrastructure@ and it might happen. If we don't tell 'em, they
won't know and it won't happen. I'll ask in a different thread :D

It does look interesting, but how about my proposal for the
immediate present? From what I understand, the Turbine
talks have stalled. It may be a long time before we get a
Wiki here, and we need to keep track of stuff now.

took me a while to figure out what a "blog" was, but I never

Yes, by the Turbine folks.
I'm following the proceedings, but it seems to be halted ATM, also due
to the fact that infrastructure is phisically moving these days (BTW,
expect possible mailing list and Bugzilla interruptions on Friday 12/13).

What IMHO looks more promising is the SubWiki that is based on
Subversion. I'm not keen on putting such important (for our community)
info on a wiki that is not secured, even on non Apache hardware, after
Sourceforge has deleted my wiki two times in the last 10 days :-(
