To answer your question, platform independence is important and we are looking
at ways to resolve the problem, but also we'd like to retain the functionality
of the CharToByteConverter.
This bug has been reported several times already in Bugzilla and on the mailing
lists, so it would appear this has become a nuisance to many users who use JVMs
that don't contain the sun.* classes. If you'd like to continue the discussion
and/or suggest some possible solutions I encourage you to add some comments to
the original report (Bug #20304).
