installation problems

i have installed tomcat 4.0.1 on OS X 10.1.  i have set my CATALINA_HOME 
and JAVA_HOME env vars to point to the correct places.  i do not have 
apache running yet - tomcat is the only webserver running...  when i go 
to localhost:8080, i get the tomcat start page - however, when i click 
on the jsp or servlet examples, i get an error 404.  i have tomcat 3.x 
working fine on this box.  just wondering if anyone else has encoutered 
this.  i installed tomcat 4.0.1 earlier today on a windows box and it 
worked fine.
