Roles: Vendor or Supplier?
Hey All,
can you help me determine the correct role? A regular supplier/vendor that
sells us merchandise that we then sell on to a retail client would be
considered a supplier or a vendor and is there any good reason why they are
both there?
I'm a little confused between these two roles. Thanks in advance.

Well, thanks for YOUR info below. :) Saves me the digging.
I figure out stuff like that by diving into the source codes. But unless someone asks a specific
question, like "if billing address and shipping address not specified, will main address be
used?", I can't dive into the source codes to find answers for every question in the universe.
So, yes, some documentation would help my clients see that OFBiz isn't as half-baked as it looks.

I had, and still have this problem, with other roles. (customer/client,
lead/prospect, etc) Maybe because something is lost in translation. I even
found difficult to translate some terms, because they are ambiguous if
translated literally.
It would be a great help if someone could write documentation with a
description of each role, when it is used and in which applications it is
used. Now I have to search in code, if the role is relevant in some
application. When I first started using OFBiz I created parties and later
had to come back and assign a role that I missed when first created them.
Something similar happened to me with contact purposes. I first assumed
that "main address" was used always, when "billing address" or "shipping
destination address" is not specified. Later I had to assign "billing
address" and "Shipping destination" for every party address.
I mean that it was not clear to me where this roles are relevant and which
applications uses them (the same for Telephones).
I could not find this kind of documentation, and would be very useful for
newbies.

It could be both. It depends on how you want to organize your data.

Here is what we got while importing our vendors;
Role Bill-From Vendor [BILL_FROM_VENDOR]
Role Supplier [SUPPLIER]
We are probably going to come up with the same issue for customer. Is it
customer or consumer? We deal directly with the consumer but sometimes,
other stores.
Lastly, is there a need for all of these default roles or are they included
to show how powerful ofbiz is?

I had the same question when I first installed OFBiz. The answer I got back from
the mailing list was as I described.
Somone said at that time that a vendor is used in a shopping mall scenario -
where an OFBiz installation is "sub-let" to vendors, who sell goods to customers.
Maybe the vendor role has changed its meaning since then.

I was under the impression that a vendor is an accounting role (bills
invoices, etc) and a supplier is a product role (product, inventory,
shipping). It's likely in Scott A.'s scenario, that the company is
both.
As far as how they are defined in the RoleType entity, a SUPPLIER has a
parent role of organizational role and VENDOR has no parent role.

Here what we want to do. We update our site inventory from a database and we
showcase it on an ecommerce side as inventory. If someone orders it, we
verify availability (most products are one of a kind) with the vendor, order
the item, receive the item and then ship it out to a customer. Thats the
typical flow.
So, do you consider this a supplier (someone who sells goods ) or a vendor?

Someone who supplies you with goods or services is a supplier.
A vendor is somone who sells goods or services, who may or may not sell them to you.
Typically, vendor roles are used in "shopping mall" type installations.

and do a jump you will see supplier.
