Give a minimal set of steps. e.g.

* git clone
* checkout develop
* make changes
* guidance on e.g. code style
* guidance on good commit message
* generate patch / submit (what we have now)

The need to checkout out the "develop" branch in particular is important, as it may be unfamiliar. (explaining what master is used for in the project would also be good)
