Politics on CouchDB

DISCLAMER: topic is a lie, don't even try.

>From IRC log:

[03:35:15] texinwien: In the why doc, illustrations refer to Joe the Plumber
[03:36:50] texinwien: Is this unintended coincidence or by design,
given the political connotation of that name in the US?
[03:37:48] texinwien: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_the_Plumber
[04:01:23] chewbranca: texinwien: got a link?
[08:52:27] texinwien: chewbranca: can you see the link to Wikipedia
that I posted above?
[08:53:05] chewbranca: texinwien: yeah I meant link to the docs
where it talks about joe the plumber
[08:53:07] chewbranca: haven't seen that
[08:54:39] texinwien: It's in the docs / manual that install with 1.6.0
[08:55:35] texinwien: 1.2 Why CouchDB aka /_utils/docs/intro/why.html
[08:57:04] texinwien: The only link I currently have is to a local
installation of CouchDB.
[08:57:57] texinwien: Is there a public, open installation of 1.6.0
where the manual is open?
[08:59:12] texinwien: 1.2.3. A Better Fit for Common Applications
[08:59:36] texinwien: Figure 1. Self-contained documents
[09:00:27] texinwien: - /_utils/docs/_images/intro-why-01.png
[09:01:13] texinwien: The graphic shows a business card and invoice
for "Joe the Plumber"
[09:02:04] Kxepal: texinwien: because this chapter was imported
from couchdb guide: http://guide.couchdb.org/draft/why.html#better
[09:03:42] texinwien: +Kxepal: I wonder whether the use of such a
politically charged name in the docs is a good idea

Do we support Obama?(: Oh no, I mean, does anyone have good GIMP
skills to fix such confusion?

Ideally, we need technical communicator (which isn't just a lawyer) to
handle and avoid such bits. And lawyer too.

So is also my opinion too. It just a guy. But we all know the story
about 2248 issue and how it ends. Better be ready for surprises.

P.S. Hope no religion men will read our docs too religiously. At least
for a while.

I have to say that as someone quite familiar with "Joe the Plumber" I
always thought it was a colloquial term equivalent to "Average Joe".
Even after seeing this I had to go Google and it sure does look like
it was coined to refer to the guy from 2008. And given the date on the
bill it seems likely someone just reached for a name when that was in
the news.

If it was enough to trip someone up reading the docs I'd be in favor
of making the change. John Doe or some other "reserved" random name
seems like it'd be easy enough to substitute.

my intention was not to say "leave it like it is". We can and should for
sure change the picture ... I was just wondering where else one can find
political incorrectness and controversial things. It's just a name :) and
it's not sth. controversial like "Augusto Pinochet".

If we can modify our docs to not be offensive or annoying to people,
surely that is better than if we were? They're just technical docs, we
can use whatever example material we can think of. Surely it's not too
hard to find something non-controversial.

Thanks for sharing this Alex.

WTF? Do we need a lawyer for every sentence we, or someone from the
community is writing somewhere in conjunction with CouchDB? I mean it's
just a name. An example name. This is nonsense imho. A short explanation to
texinwien is good enough and no offense to texinwien for sure !

The Plumber is certainly news to me, but I see no reason why couchdb should help everybody relax and ensure our material (code, docs, …) minimises harm and removes potentially offensive/tainted/charged/debatable content.  Would it make sense simply to update these things each time it comes up, rather than opening the floor for debate, unless there’s no obvious appropriate replacement? Perhaps that’s bylaw-worthy.

BTW our irc channel is not logged and while this snippet is not likely to cause the world to collapse, there’s an expectation that what’s said on IRC stays on IRC, as part of being a Safe Place to chat. This was pointed out to me once but it doesn’t appear to be documented anywhere either.

As I didn’t see either of these points noted in CoC or bylaws, I will add this next week unless somebody thinks this should be DISCUSSed and starts a separate thread.
