Application Server for me!

Hi All,

this one is a little off-topic but on the other hand, i think it concerns us all

Yesterday once again I lost about 2 hours because my rehdat installation didn't have the apxs tool installed and i needed it to make md_jk in order to forward requests from apache to my tapestry application running on tomcat.

These kind of situations aren't uncommon. I am especially interessted in doing my Tapestry project and less interested in all this server configuration.

Does anyone know whether there is some kind of distribution (linux) containing a complete stack for running java web projects: java VM, tomcat (and/or other), jboss, mysql (and/or), apache, ftp, samba, ssh, cvs server, ...
(do I smell a licence problem here!)

-Install the distribution (or maybe just write an image to a HD)
-Install your web application
-Use the web application (after 1 hour instead of 3 weeks and total frustration)
-All this stuff for free of course ;-)

Other nice features would be
-standard way of deploying new developments to the the system
-linking systems together: development - testing - production
-web interface to manage the server

Anyone heard of anything like this?

Kind Regards,
Lennart

I have not looked that closely but for 8 and 9 (I run 9) you can get security updates and some rollup patches with no support contract. With 10 if you want all updates it's $120 per socket/per year. Not quite free but might be worth it if you can't get any updates.

The other good thing about Solaris is the Java implementation is up to date. This can be a problem on everything else except Windows.

Unless they changed their policy, with the free version, you can't
have any system updates.

I've had very good luck with Gentoo. Although no pre-built binary is
available, all that stuff is in portage. Plus the speed is out of this
world. I wasn't sure on JBoss, but after checking it's there as well.

Suse is much more Java friendly... Comes with JDK1.4 all configured
and lots of librairies (maybe even tomcat?). Also unless you need some
specific Apache features, I would recommend to use Tomcat by itself.

just use Tomcat ant tasks

what do you mean?

What kind of management?

Quick note about JK2... it is now unsupported.

http://jakarta.apache.org/tomcat/tomcat-4.1-doc/jk2/news/
20041100.html#20041115.1
------------------------
15 November - JK2 is officially unsupported
JK2 has been put in maintainer mode and no further development will
take place. The reason for shutting down JK2 development was the lack
of developers
interest. Other reason was lack of users interest in adopting JK2,
caused by configuration complexity when compared to JK.
<more at the link>
------------------------

We were using JK2, but recently switched back to JK because of this
issue. jk does work with Apache 2.

RedHat from about 9 on ships with Apache 2.x not Apache 1.x, so you'd
want mod_jk2. apxs2 is in the httpd-devel package; assuming you have
an up2date account you can "up2date httpd-devel". If you mean Fedora
and not RedHat, then something like "yum install httpd-devel" would
have worked.

I noticed, by the way, googling for "rhel apxs" shows, as the second
link, "Building mod_jk2 on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3."
