Use brackets to prevent this error.
Your command it is interpreted like this:
{code}

select c1 from tversion where 1 * ( cnull is null );
{code}

You should use this instead:
{code}

 select c1 from tversion where ( 1 * cnnull ) is null; 
 OK
 +-----+
 | c1  |
 +-----+
 +-----+
