I have an old 4.1.2 build.
I run Help > Check for update... menu

You refer to "Project Activity"?

I couldn't figure out where that wrong information comes from or where
it can be updated...

Curiously enough, according to Sourceforge the latest activity was 1 year ago...

https://sourceforge.net/projects/openofficeorg.mirror/?source=directory

I know AOO is not exactly very active but Sourceforge isn't helping either...

You must differentiate between AOO updates and Extension updates...
AOO update feeds are hosted at Apache, those for the extensions at
SourceForge.

Let's concentrate on the AOO update issue (for the moment).
I just republished the update feed for AOO 4.1.5 (which didn't change
the behavior) [1].

This file is "empty" (in comparison to [2] ) and AOO 4.1.5 should only
tell you that it is up to date.
But the error message now is the same as if there is no file at all.

[1] https://ooo-updates.apache.org/aoo415/check.Update
[2] https://ooo-updates.apache.org/aoo413/check.Update

All this *did* work after the release of AOO 4.1.5 in December 2017.

   Matthias

with a previous version (e.g., 4.1.3) I get a message that 4.1.5 is
available.

So, it is actually a problem of SF.net that there is no hint that 4.1.5
is the current version and no newer updates are available? Or is
something missing in our update service?

Re: Checking update failed

Posted by Matthias Seidel <ma...@hamburg.de>.
The first bug report from a user:
https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=127789

AOO update fails due to the non-responding servers (timeout?), Extension
update fails since SourceForge moved to the new datacenter (missing
protocol?).

That said, I can reproduce the issue with AOO 4.1.5, while everything
works fine with AOO 4.2.0-dev (on Windows)

   Matthias

Last time I tried there were only 2 and every second try failed.

Who wants to open a ticket with Infra?

No, only 2 servers responding. Server 40.79.78.1 is not responding.

So if you are unlucky you will always get "Error reading data from the Internet.
Server error message: ."

I get this message in AOO 4.1.5 two out of three tries...

Hi Pedro,

I repeated ping, now we have 3 servers "responding":

ping ooo-updates.apache.org
PING ooo-updates.apache.org (195.154.151.36) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from tlp-eu-west.apache.org (195.154.151.36): icmp_seq=1 ttl=50

64 bytes from tlp-eu-west.apache.org (195.154.151.36): icmp_seq=2 ttl=50
time=33.9 ms
64 bytes from tlp-eu-west.apache.org (195.154.151.36): icmp_seq=3 ttl=50
time=36.7 ms

ping ooo-updates.apache.org
PING ooo-updates.apache.org (140.211.11.105) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from themis.apache.org (140.211.11.105): icmp_seq=1 ttl=42
time=182 ms
64 bytes from themis.apache.org (140.211.11.105): icmp_seq=2 ttl=42
time=181 ms
64 bytes from themis.apache.org (140.211.11.105): icmp_seq=3 ttl=42
time=181 ms

ping ooo-updates.apache.org
PING ooo-updates.apache.org (40.79.78.1) 56(84) bytes of data.
^C
--- ooo-updates.apache.org ping statistics ---
3 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time 2034ms

Re: Checking update failed

Posted by Pedro Lino <pe...@mailbox.org>.
I had replied earlier but directly to the OP.

Something is very wrong on the Apache server

ping ooo-updates.apache.org
PING ooo-updates.apache.org (40.79.78.1) 56(84) bytes of data.
^C
--- ooo-updates.apache.org ping statistics ---
108 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time 106999ms

There is no connection. The OS is irrelevant.

No, you are not alone... ;-)
Normally it works for me (4.1.5 on Ubuntu) if I do a second check.

See: https://www.mail-archive.com/dev@openoffice.apache.org/msg33425.html

What OS are you on?
