Configuring Model 3

Hi,
  I am newbie to Jackrabbit, I downloaded the relevant jars, but it didn't get a clear picture on how to get configure a model 3 Jackrabbit content server, so that I can talk to it from a standalone client program.
   
  Any tips or links to info would be great.
